    Dogs of the Deadball Era

    Every dog has its day!

During the pre-1920 era in major league baseball, a number of teams had canine mascots that stayed on the bench with the players and posed with them for team pictures. As we enter the dog days of summer, I thought it would be appropriate to compile the photos that I've found into a single thread. (Several of these have previously been posted by others in different threads on Baseball Fever.) I don't think that it's necessary for this thread to identify all of the players in the team photos, but if anyone cares to identify the breeds of the dogs, I'll update the captions.

I will begin with this baseball card issued by Old Judge Cigarettes in 1888:

    1896 Baltimore Orioles with dog

(It's hard to make out exactly what the white animal is, and I've seen it called a chicken, but I think it's a fluffy dog.)

1901 Chicago Orphans (Cubs) with dog

This is one of three shots taken by the photographer of the team with this dog. In the first photo, the dog is lying on the ground on the right side. In the second photo, the dog is a blur moving across the front. This is the third photo. I recently posted all three (unedited) in the "1906-12 Chicago Cubs" thread, page 2, #48.

1907 Chicago Cubs player Mike Kehoe with dog

Later in this season, Kehoe was traded to the Washington Senators to serve as a personal catcher for a rookie pitcher with some potential named Johnson. It is not clear whether the dog was included in the transaction.

I think that Gardner is just noting with interest that the dog is relieving itself on Wolter.

The NH Fisher Cats have a dog who acts as a batboy at times, dragging the player's bats back to the bench in its mouth. I think I might be POed if I had a bat I really liked and it ended up getting teethmarks all over it.
