Actually that photo of Ruth was taken on 08/23/1942 when he had his famous "duel" with Walter Johnson. The Babe would have been around 48 years old!!!

[Jordan's trainer] began by addressing Jordan’s core ... Jordan was required to do medicine ball exercises and other core strengthening exercises. He did medicine ball sit ups which are sit ups performed while holding a medicine ball in each hand and up in the air as you perform the sit ups ... He also did pushups with his hands placed on a Physio ball as well as leg raises and other common core strength exercises.

Jordan incorporated numerous strength training exercises into his workout program. He used such strength building workouts as biceps curls, deadlifts, good mornings, power cleans and bench presses. Michael also did squats ...

Besides typical strength training, Jordan also performed agility exercises. These included such stretching workouts as placing his hands on the floor and walking them across the floor with his legs held straight and still and then walking them back. He would also place both hands on the floor and extending one leg straight back while placing his weight on the planted foot.

Jordan worked on agility and participated in light weight lifting and quick repetitions 3 days a week. He preferred working out early in the morning for about 1 hour.

HOW BABE RUTH STAYED IN SHAPE:

Creamer, Robert (1974). Babe: The Legend Comes to Life. Simon & Schuster.

Ruth drank bicarbonate of soda every day in the dugout. He called it his milk. He began the habit one day after he gobbled down a couple of hot dogs too quickly and felt bloated just before game time. The trainer recommended bicarbonate. It made him feel good and he decided that was the ideal diet before a game: a couple of hot dogs and a glass of bicarb. He chewed tobacco and gum, smoked cigars and occasionally cigarettes or a pipe, took snuff in such vast amounts that some of the dust became impacted in his nasal passages.

Creamer wrote a great book on the Babe but lets look at another side of Babe. Yes at times he did carry too much weight. But after the 1925 season, over the winter he tied up with Arty McGovern. I think Babe realized, getting older now, time to make come changes. At McGovern's gym for some years he got into decent shape. I've seen pictures of him at the gym, stationary bike, medicine ball, playing handball, rowing machine, McGovern doing body stretching on The Babe and Arty having him run a couple of miles.

Yankee owners were shocked and pleased, Babe showed up at spring training at 212 pounds. I would imagine over the course of the season he packed on some pounds but those off season sessions at McGovern's probably added some playing time to his career.
Ruth had to be one of the few ballplayers who trained over the winter to get in shape for the coming season, at that time period.
