It's official...Rays sign Roberto Hernandez, F/K/A Fausto Carmona

Either #5 starter or replaces Davis in the bullpen IMO

Just don't like this signing..... except for one season he is terrible and has very soft unimpressive stuff.

I posted this in the General Offseason thread.

He strikes out a below average number of hitters, while walking a league average amount.

His best pitch is an upper 80's sinker that allows him to generate a GB% of over 50%.

The Rays likely won't use him as a starter, but instead as a low-leverage (6th inning) reliever as they did with Burke Badenhop last season.

The two players are quite similar over the last 3 seasons. Remember that Hernandez was a starter, and Badenhop a reliever. Most starters improve their K and BB rates when moving to the bullpen.
It looks like a fine, low-cost move for the Rays

If Longo stays healthy for 145 games and with Escobar now at SS, the left side of the defense improves exponentially, and that GB% can generate a lot of DP balls. Nobody thought the Fernando Rodney signing last winter was such a big deal either....just sayin'

I don't expect Longoria to be healthy for 145 games but I do look forward to the defense improving significantly this year. I'm even more excited about the 1500+ AB's previously going to .200 hitters now going to likely .250 hitters. And having more than two players hit over 20 home runs looks promising as well.

Well thought i would revive this one lol. Rays have been rather quite since the trade and signing longo to a long term deal. Wonder who they will bring in for the DH.

There are still guys out there that the Rays will wait on...maybe a Travis Hafner, wouldn't mind Luke Scott back if he is healthy and passes a physical, even a chastened Delmon Young I would take back at a reduced price...

Rays need to replace another arm in the bullpen, maybe with Cesar Ramos? JP Howell to the Dodgers

If the season started tomorrow, what would the lineup look like?

    Best guess estimate:

    LF Guyer/Fuld
    CF Jennings
    RF Joyce
    1B Loney
    2B Zobrist
    SS Escobar
    3B Longoria
    C Molina
    DH Ryan Roberts
    SP Price

You think Loney and Escobar will bat ahead of Longoria?

I just listed them by position, not by batting order...did OF first, then IF, then C, DH and SP...

    That plus a rotation of:

    Price
    Hellickson
    Niemann
    Cobb
    Odorizzi/Archer

The team will be solid this year, even in a very competitive AL East. I've been a pretty consistent Rays follower since '08. I really love what Friedman is doing down there in Tampa. Best of luck to y'all in 2013!

What about Wil Myers? AAA before callup?

I'd bet he's in AAA until the end of May or so simply to delay his clock.
