Bill Baer REALLY doesn't like the Delmon Young signing.

The problem with the D. Young signing - aside from the fact that the $750k base expands based on easy-to-reach incentives, is that he's just another player who falls into the opposite category of what Ruben wanted. At the end of '11, he was emphatic that this team changes its approach at the plate - plays smarter and becomes more patient.

But the team he's put together heading into 2013 could be the least patient team we've seen in quite some time... Here are the key players no longer on the roster along with 2012 PAs - BBs (BB%).
    Code:
    P. Polanco 18 - 328 (5.5%)
    J. Pierre 23 - 439 (5.2%)
    S. Victorino 35 - 431 (8.1%)
    H. Pence 37 - 440 (8.4%)
Here is who'll be getting the bulk of the playing time in their place(s)...
    Code:
    M. Young 33 - 651 (5.1%)
    B. Revere 29 - 553 (5.2%)
    D. Young 20 - 608 (3.3%)
Two players who could either be released or playing time stunted are...
    Code:
    J. Mayberry 34 - 479 (7.1%)
    D. Brown 21 - 212 (9.9%)
See anything odd here? Considering Ruben wanted a more patient approach, he's offering the most playing time to newcomers who don't show patience to get on base whatsoever. Add in that both Mayberry & Brown are willing to at least takes a walk makes me scratch my head a bit about some of these acquisitions.

Forgetting Dom Brown and the enigma that he is, is Delmon Young really any better than John Mayberry? Even with their splits vs LHPs:
    Code:
    D. Young .307/.341/.483/.824
    J. Mayberry .284/.328/.547/.875
Add into the fact that while Delmon can't play the field, Mayberry can play all three OF positions adequately as well as be a RH option at 1B if needed. It's not that the signing is all that terrible based on the $750K - hell, it's better than the multi-year deals given to guys like Nix & Contreras. But only if there's not an equal or better possible option already in house. Sure, questions arise about somebody like Ruf - who just as well can fall right out of the league this year. Or maybe Brown just can't get things going. But Mayberry, who'll make less money being a year away from arbitration, should be every bit as good as Young.

Other than hitting a home run, getting on base is the best way to increase the odds of scoring runs. And we know you need to score runs to win games. Considering the outgoing players had a 7.5% walk rate are being replaced by those with a 4.5% walk rate, it tells me there will be less opportunities that runs can score simply because there's a lesser chance runners are on base.

This was going to be an interesting offseason. It was the first that Ruben didn't have an open checkbook, and he needed to assess players based on skill/$ over simply looking at who puts up the gaudy stats and wants the most money. However, being that the Phillies are one of the very few teams left who don't use analytical data while scouting players, it shows up when we see the type of players selected when there's a budget crunch.

Chad Durbin is returning - pending a physical. Phils' signed him to a one-year deal with a club option for 2014.

    ...and there was much rejoicing.

Long-time American league infielder Yuniesky Betancourt was signed to a minor league contract by the Phillies and will be a non-roster invitee to SpringTraining. Betancourt turns 31 tomorrow.

To make room on the 40 Man roster for newly-signed Chad Durbin, the Phillies designated 24 year old righthanded pitcher, J.C. Ramirez for assignment.

I was watching some footage from the 2012 World Series.

Delmon Young may only be 27 but he runs like he's 40.

    Phillies have released Juan Cruz.

    Well, that was short-lived.

After practice, Halladay said last year's issue was with his lower back and not with his arm. It didn't really hurt, it just never "clicked" and he couldn't find a comfort zone. Says he feels the best he has, and that he'd like to retire as a Phillie when asked about his upcoming free agency.

    From Ryan Lawrence:

Halladay on making adjustments: "Chase suggested I should drill a few more guys, so maybe I'll do that."

Charlie wants to split the lefties (Cole and Cliff). Hamels could get the opening day start, followed maybe by Kendrick and then Lee. That would put Halladay as the starter for the CBP home opener.

It was said tongue in cheek. Halladay's one of the least to put a ball in a batter's ribs, and even if someone had seriously mentioned it to him, he wouldn't call out a player by name.

Today was Ryan Howard's turn to talk to the press. Says his achilles feels great compared to last year - not surprising since he was only months past surgery and heading to an infection. But he seemed upbeat. He took exceptance to the team being called "old". He sounded at times like he (and the team) has a chip on their shoulder with so many people writing them off and calling them old and broken down. It's good for the fans to hear, but old brittle bodies do tend to break down over the season. Team health is going to be a major necessity for this team this year, and Charlie has to give his players appropriate rest. No more having Howard play every single game until the AS break.

On another note, last night Carlos Ruiz faced the media and discussed his suspension. He didn't really reveal much. Reading through reader comments on sites, it seems there's a bit of mixed feelings. There's the group that instantly villifies any player linked to drug use. Then there's the group who figured it was just a mistake but just now found out it was his second offense. Finally, there's the group that backs their own team's players - regardless of what they've done.

Utley's day in front of the cameras. Many questions about his health of course...

"I feel pretty damn good right now."

Says the different training process this offseason has his legs feeling stronger. He expects to be ready for the start of Grapefruit games. Speaking highly of the newcomers to the team - especially while watching Revere shag flies. His monotone delivery can really put one to sleep though. Here's a short exerpt.

Phillies added lefthanded pitcher Corey Young to Spring Training camp (non-roster player with Major League Camp invite).
Released by Texas after last season Young had been with the Rangers AA-Texas League club for the last couple of seasons. He is a 26 year old Seton Hall University graduate with no major leagues experience. he's a 12th round pick by Texas in the 2008 Amateur Draft. 60 players are now in the Phillies major leagues camp including a whopping total of 32 pitchers.

After Microfracture surgery last November on an ankle, Delmon Young is not yet pain-free and there is now a possibility that he will open the season on the Disabled List.

Yikes! 5.89 ERA along with a 1.61 WHIP over four seasons in AA for Corey Young. Only threw 19 innings last year - wonder if he's coming off some surgery.

Okay, so it's Michael Young... check... Delmon Young... check... Corey Young... check...

Anymore "Youngs" out there that Rube & Co can go after?

3 Youngs this year in camp as opposed to zero Youngs in camp this time last year. Did Rube misunderstand when Phillies beat reporters wrote that the team needed to get "YOUNGer"?

Proving once again that you have to be careful what you wish for. We wanted a number of Young players, and we got them!

It's funny because it's a name AND an adjective.
