Congratulations, that's all.
Congratulations, that's all.
I'd rather have Morse, who the M's ended up with in the 3 team deal. Jaso is mediocre at best - Norris will probably start.

Jaso is the better player. Morse has some power, that's it. Morse doesn't have a defensive position, doesn't run the bases well, doesn't draw walks, strikes out too much. Jaso is the better player who is cheaper, under club control longer. If you're an Oakland fan, be glad you have him. He was misused by Wedge last year and if the A's give him enough PA, he will be proven to be one of the best catchers in the game. Oakland won the deal, no question.
Sounds like a Jaso/Norris platoon. I see Kottars was DFA'd the day after he signed a deal.
Morse had a breakout year in '11 and played alright after his injury in '12. He had an OPS of over .900 in '11 and has hit 3 bills or close to it over the past few years. I'd rather have that than a platoon catcher on my squad... If Jaso gets a years worth of PA's in a season, he might be able to put something decent together...

Jaso 5.5 WAR over the last 3 seasons as a platoon catcher
Morse 4.7 WAR over the last 3 seasons as a 1B/LF
You should consider the relevant talent levels
LF 2012: .326/.431
1B 2012: .336/.432
C 2012: .318/.400

Jaso is much more better than his position mates than Morse is. Thus, he's worth a lot more
EDIT: Plus, Morse makes $7 million this year and is a free agent after the season.
Jaso will probably make about $7 million over the next 3 seasons that he's under team control.

Terrific Beane-esque move.
Jaso/Norris platoon is the epitome of Billy Beane's methodology.

Well, all WAR really is those other stats, measured against average players, converted to runs and adjusted for replacement.
He hasn't shown that he can hit lefties. He's 25% above average vs righties, and 40% below average vs lefties.I'm hoping Jaso plays well that enough that he's NOT platooned...
vs L: 15% walks, 18% K's, .066 ISO
vs R: 13% walks, 11% K's, .151 ISO

Norris will start , I only hope Jaso has as many big hits as Kottares had...
If the A's were smart they'd start Jaso against RHP. Wedge had him buried behind Olivo a good portion of last season. Jaso will start the season on a defending division winning team, while Olivo remains unemployed.
You don't have to wonder.
You can easily test it yourself
It's extremely reliable

I was surprised that the A's gave up on Kotteras. He did make a few costly errors, but they were tough plays. Jaso has better offensive stats and is 5 years younger than Kotteras, who's probably at his peak of performance now.
The A's gave up 21 year old pitcher A.J. Cole, who despite his bad stats at Stockton has a 97 mile per hour fastball.
If the A's want to win in 2013 this is a good trade.
