He certainly had a better peak than Hank.
Who knows? Probably that lifestyle helped him play in that high level. Just look at Josh Hamilton this season. When he stopped chewing tobbaco, he stopped hitting.

Yeah, and maybe Pete Gray was better off with just one arm, it made him work harder.

Pete Gray trained harder. Yes that was a pun in bad taste.

But JR's incessant refrain is different: "Oh, right, you believe that after doing not much of anything for thousands of years, human evolution made a huge leap in the twentieth century." That is what I get tired of reading. When you argue against these same people, your argument is not, "Oh, you must believe in hyperevolution," and I find it hard to believe that you lean heavily on JR's for intellectual support.
Edit: Oh, your question: No difficulties;[facetiae] Once baseball achieved its perfect balance, arm strength, pitch velocity, fast-twitch reflexes, and runner speed all kept pace with one another. When Usain Bolt looks like Ron Cey sprinting the 100 meters, the 22nd century equivalent of Carl Crawford will still be thrown out by a step. That's the mystic essence of baseball that we can't resist. [/facetiae]
I read on here all the time that Babe Ruth would be Adam Dunn or Jim Thome, if he played today. I read on here all the time that players from the past aren't good enough athletes to play today

BTW someone has to make fun of these morons. There is so much outrageous sh*t written this board, someone has to make fun of it.

And you are so condescending as to call me un-intellectual? Of course satire is only for smart people. I guess you don't get it.

Satire translates poorly when it is not expected. Your tendency to hyperbolize obscures it.

I recognize the satire, but I can see it is self-inflicted.

I have never called you "un-intellectual." I implied that there was little intellectual support for Sultan's arguments in your claim that physical development during the twentieth century could only be attributed to sudden rapid evolution, and thus did not take place. Perhaps I should have said, "provide little conceptual support."

I do think that other of your positions are deliberately anti-intellectual, for example, your disdain for theoretical constructs like runs created. I don't thereby disparage your intellect, just your attitude. All disciplines devoted to inquiry make use of abstractions and generalizations. Your tack is akin to throwing out Newtonian physics because there is no such thing as a perfect vacuum.

I also think that your tactics make it difficult for you to recognize when you are in error and might learn something.

I am never condescending to you. I take your ideas seriously enough to disagree with them. Thousands wouldn't.

Edit: Further, whenever we are in agreement, I make a point of referring to it. And I never, ever call people I disagree with "morons." I wish you would stop.

Indeed the first step toward finding out is to acknowledge you do not satisfactorily know already; so that no blight can so surely arrest all intellectual growth as the blight of cocksureness.--CS Peirce

Maybe he does them and likes them a lot. Gets signed by the Marlins for the teams championship stockpiling and gets addicted to cocaine in Miami. Then starts doing ecstasy to offset the rage from the coke and steroids and is playing really messed up and starts an early decline. So he gets cleaned up and joins the war on terror since he's a patriot. Then he gets killed by friendly fire and the government makes up a story about how he overcame drugs to serve his country and was shot by the Taliban trying to rescue ten babies who were going to be slaughtered. The Marlins build a statue of him. With the newly found publicity they get a brand new stadium in '05 and nobody shows up anyhow.

I didn't call you personally, a moron, sorry if it was implied

No, I didn't infer that at all. I think most of the time we get along pretty well for arch-foes. Sometimes I'm self-righteous, and I will try to damp that down, keep things light.
