Yeah 24-30 is asking waaaaaaaaaay too much. So you know: low end 15-39, that's what I'm looking at right now.

Our pitching staff, with the possible exception of Teheran, is not very good. I think everybody gets that. Some young prospects who have been forced to learn at the big league level have shown glimpses of promise but, for the large part, have not progressed as well as we would have liked. I'm not making excused for them but I have to wonder...has their progress been compromised by the fact that they are kids pitching for a team that gives them absolutely no margin for error? Does the fact that the Braves have no consistent offense what-so-ever put undue pressure on these guys while they're learning on the job? I don't know the answer to that but I do know that the lack of offense is a big reason why the Braves are a week into August and under 40 wins. I'm a firm believer in the old adage that says, "You are what your record says you are." And the Braves record says that they just aren't a very good team. And there are a lot of reasons why, its not all on the rotation. But it is a big part of it! There's plenty of blame to go around but then again, isn't this what we expected?

We can say that exact same thing about Tom Glavine, Steve Avery, Pete Smith, Zane Smith, and John Smoltz, as they were on the 1986-90 teams that forced them to make no mistakes. But the Braves had three special guys and a couple of good pitchers come out of that. Honestly? I don't think that matters. If being on a bad team shatters their confidence, maybe they're not really cut out to be major league players.46 wins to match last year's total

Tom Verducci of MLB.com said yesterday or the day before that he didn't think much of the Braves' restructuring. He claimed there was no impact pitcher in all the young arms acquired, that the Braves were after quantity rather than quality. He added that the Padres were doing it better by going after quality.
What do you guys think?

In one sense he's right: none of the arms they acquired have been impressive. The only one that has been good was Chris Ellis and he's been an absolute failure at Gwinnett this year. On the other hand, even guys perceived as "quality" can bomb out. One only needs to point at Buxton in Minnesota to see that.
And not to go back to Glavine and Smoltz again, but I hardly think anyone we calling them "impact players" in 1989 and 1990. If all these "lottery tickets" strike out, that'd be a sheer outlier.46 wins to match last year's total

Don't miss my point about our young pitchers. My post was meant to be more of a defense of them than an indictment. I was just wondering how much their struggles had to do with the fact that, with the margin for error being so small due to a lack of offensive support, that they are being put in stressful situations where one mistake can beat you. That can put a strain on even established, veteran pitchers when put in that situation start after start. Most any pitcher will say that its not the total number of pitches that wears on them as much as the amount of stressful pitches. I think we saw that to some extend toward the end of last season with Shelby Miller. If a lack of run support can take a toll a veteran pitcher, how can it not take even a greater toll on kids who, while they may be talented, have a lack of experience. One thing our pitchers should have in their favor is the same thing Smoltz, Glavine and Avery had going for them when they first came up, that is the team is not very good and nobody expects it to win. There should be no real pressure to win. But they're human and they are competitive by nature or they wouldn't be where they are, so we know they want to win badly. And in this modern era, there seems to be more of a sense of urgency and teams seem to have less patience with young guys than they did in the late 80s. Now they send guys up and down at the drop of a hat. I may be wrong, but I don't remember them doing that as much 25-30 years ago. But as I said before, I'm not ready to give up on, or call any of them a bust at this point in time. I'm not sure we know enough about any of them to make that determination yet. And I don't agree with the Verducci comment. Very few pitchers are ever going to be 100% can't miss prospects. And of the top prospects, probably at least half are not going to workout they way they are projected. But the more you acquire, the better the chances you have of hitting more than a few of them. On the bright side, the offense was good tonight and while the pitching wasn't great, it didn't have to be.

Yeah, Dave O'Brien is busy touting the Braves' ML-high batting average after the All-Star break on Twitter. Apparently, they have more homers than the Cubs in that span (by the tiniest of margins, 15-14). So, yeah, just a mass correction because they're not the 1899 Cleveland Spiders.46 wins to match last year's total

What are we now? 3-0-1 since that 4 game sweep in Denver? 7-4 in the last 11? I'm not going to get my hopes up because every time I do, we turn around and lose 4 or 5 straight. But the last two games have been fun, although I did get a bit nervous yesterday in the 8th. I keep trying to just enjoy these wins when they come, try not to get too down about the losses and just try to take this season for what it is, although sometimes that's all easier said than done. But this last little run has been extra sweet when you consider they're doing it with a starting rotation that basically consists of smoke and mirrors. Its amazing what a little offense will do!
