    Joe Durham, former Orioles outfielder, passes away

    Joe "Pop" Durham played for the Orioles in 1954 and 1957. He earned considerable playing time the latter year, appearing in 77 games with 157 at-bats, though he was more of a quadruple-A player, having spent six campaigns with the Orioles Triple-A teams. He died April 28 at 84.

    It was an everyday clout, as home runs go — a solo shot to left field in a meaningless late-season game between two teams tied for last place in the American League. Except that the man who hit it, Joe Durham, was African-American and the first of his race to homer for the Orioles in 1954.

    Joseph Vann Durham died Thursday of natural causes at Northwest Hospital Hospice Center. A Randallstown resident, Durham was 84. The Orioles paid tribute to the former outfielder Thursday night with a moment of silence prior to their game against the Chicago White Sox at Camden Yards.a
