    Torre's 1998 Yankees thump Casey's 1954 Yankees, 96-66!

The 1998 Yankees got a lower seed than they deserved after not playing that well in the Test League that I ran. They probably should have been a number one or number two seed, as they just crushed a team that went 103-51 in their time.

Rivera (4-2, 1.64, 38 saves) big. The cutter was bothering Mantle so much that he started batting right handed against Rivera like he did against Hoyt Wilhelm. Lloyd (6-0, 2.43) really good. El Duque (14-4, 2.47) was their best starter. Cone (17-6, 3.18) with an excellent season.

The 98 Yankees will next take on another great modern day AL team as they get the winner of tonight's series between the 2001 Mariners and the 1995 Indians.

Looking back on earlier, I'm not shocked the 1993 Braves were upset because they were a major second half team and were a bit lucky to even be tied with the Giants at the end.

Excellent job by the way. I'm most surprised at the 1985 Yankees; at least Phil is doing good for someone.

    2001 Mariners edge 1995 Indians, 83-79!

This was a see saw battle with loads of lead changes. Both teams were 79-79 with 4 games left, and the Mariners won all 4 of those games to finish 4 games ahead. The Mariners will now meet the 1998 Yankees with a trip to the Final Four on the line. The Mariners would dearly love to avenge their loss to the Yankees in the 2001 ALCS.

Lofton stole 54 of 67 but scored jut 79 runs. Belle went 41-113. Manny hit just .236, and Sorrento (.193) was on the interstate.

Bullpen was really good led by Mesa (1.35 ERA, 31 saves) who did not allow a HR all year. Assenmacher (1.36 ERA) as the LOOGY. Plunk (1.79 ERA in 55 innings) and Tavarez (8-2, 2.91 in 86 innings+). The starters did not fare as well. Only Ogea (9-5, 3.24) and Hershiser (14-11, 3.90) had winning records. Nagy and Clark with ERA's in the mid-fives.

Pennock (14-8, 3.01) and Hoyt (16-12, 3.41) were very good starters. Shawkey (3-1, 2.08 5 saves) great in 52 innings. Shocker (14-8 3.65) very solid.

Bullpen was really good with Delcarmen (4-0, 2.42), Papelbon (7-4, 2.47, 28 saves) and Timlin (5-4, 2.89) really shining. Lester (6-3, 3.25) very good in 12 starts. All 5 of the main starters had losing records with ERA's near 5.00 or worse. Beckett kept challenging Babe and Lou and gave up 39 HRs in 176 innings. Amazing that they came so close to winning this series with none of the main starters pitching well.

Yankees made 21 more errors, but they also turned 200 DPs. A lot more balls in play for the Red Sox as their pitchers struck out way more batters than the Yankees pitchers.
