Calero (1.09 ERA) and Izzy (6-3, 2.19, 29 saves) were great. Carpenter (15-8, 3.22) was the best starter in the series. Woody Williams (4-17) really killed them.

Papelbon amazing, allows just 31 hits and 14 walks in 76 innings. Delcarmen at 1.69 in 80 innings. Red Sox bullpen was incredible. Beckett (13-7, 3.40) was the only main starter with a winning record, yet they somehow won the series.

    1998 Braves pound 2009 Yankees, 94-68.

We finally have a National League team in the Sweet Sixteen as the 1998 Braves got some measure of revenge against Jeter's Yankees who had beaten them in the world series in both 1996 and 1999. The Yankees led for quite a while in this season, but the Braves took over by winning 13 of 14 early in July and then proceeded to pull away.

    2009 New York Yankees	68	94	.420	26	3-7	L2	668	809	-141
Yankees got badly outhomered, 204 to 127. Cano solid at .301 with 24 HRs, but just 66 runs and 83 RBIs. Jeter hit .299 but just 87 runs and a miniscule 39 RBIs. Tex went 24-103. Swish with 93 walks, but he hit just .203 with 16 HRs.

Red Sox pitchers picked off 37 Giants runners. Neither team fielded well. Both made a ton of errors and neither turned a lot of DP's.

    Sparky's 1976 Reds absolutely bury Casey's 1950 Yankees, 105-57!

This Reds team has proven now that they are a very legitimate threat to go all the way in this tournament. They won 108 games against the 29 Cubs and now they have won 105 games against a very good team in the 1950 Yankees. They will next play the winner of tonight's series between the 1978 Yankees and the 1998 Astros.

Wakefield was a phenomenal pinch hitter at .464/.551/464. All singles, but what the hey. He was 1 for 2 in real life. Rizzuto big at .326 with 99 runs and 80 RBIs. DiMaggio went 43-114. They scored enough runs, but apparently their pitching was terrible.

Somehow the Yankees had a good SB% (72%) against Bench.

Only 12 complete games with Sparky (Captain Hook) managing, and 11 of those were shutouts. Eastwick solid at 2.75 with 21 saves. Rookie Pat Zachry (15-5, 2.94) was the top starter. Gullett (10-4, 3.29) solid when he was healthy. McEnaney got hit hard but still went 8-2 with 7 saves.

Rookie Whitey Ford (3.13) was solid. Everybody else had an ERA near 5.00 or worse. The Reds lineup was too much.

1998 Astros Roll Over the 1978 Yankees, 89-73!

We now have three teams from 1998 in the Sweet Sixteen, as the Astros join the Yankees and Braves. Houston took command here against the 1978 Yankees and won a solid victory.

    1978 New York Yankees	73	89	.451	16	4-6	W1	619	715 -96
Playing 81 games in the Astrodome, the Yankees did not even break 100 HRs, hitting just 91. Piniella hit .327 but with just 48 RBIs. Randolph solid with a .384 OBP and 27 steals but just 80 runs scored. Reggie and Nettles each with just 19 HRs and 62 RBIs. Chambliss slugged just .326 but led the team with 67 RBIs.

1953 Boys of Summer whip the 2013 Red Sox 94-68!

This series was neck and neck for a while but the Dodgers went on a 16-6 run in June and took command. Fenway and the DH must have agreed with Brooklyn as they scored 959 runs.

The Dodgers ran wild on the bases, stealing 156 out of 194 (80.4%). Hodges at .317-25-91 with 115 runs. Snider at .310-37-142 with 125 runs. Furillo at .306-19-101. Look at Preacher Roe (17-3, 3.78). Podres (9-4, 3.53) and Milliken (11-2, 3.96) also very good. Labine (2.65 ERA in 116 innings) and Hughes (26 saves, 3.14 ERA in 72 innings) both great in relief. Erskine (14-18, 4.38) with an off season. Loes somehow went 14-6 with a 4.58 ERA. Can this team get enough pitching to get to the Final Four?

Uehara (10-2, 1.81, 14 saves) was great, allowing just 48 hits in 104 innings. Buchholz (6-6 3.19) was the best starter. Two of the main starters had an ERA over 6.00. Doubront (8-13, 6.09) and Dempster (5-18, 6.32). Somehow Lackey (11-10, 4.55) fashioned a winning record.

Guisti really good with a 2.13 ERA with 9 saves in over 100 innings. Hernandez (7-3, 2.25, 10 saves) also really good. Briles (12-9, 3.60) was the top starter. Moose (16-12, 4.15) was the top winner. Blass (10-18, 5.32) was bad and Kison (2-15, 6.73) was terrible.

Another great season for little known Brian Fisher (6-2, 1.90, 11 saves) in 85 innings. Lefty Dennis Rasmussen (9-4, 3.17) was very good. Ron Guidry (15-8, 3.58) was the top winner on the staff. Righetti (9-9, 15 saves, 5.01 ERA) was just bad. Somehow Joe Cowley (9-7, 4.98) had a winning record.
