1950 Yankees edge 1935 Tigers 84-78 in high scoring series!!!

Despite being outscored by 24 runs on the season Casey Stengel's 1950 Yankees got by Mickey Cochrane's 1935 Tigers in a close race. You would expect it to be close in an 8-9 matchup, and it was. The Yankees will next take on the 1976 Reds, looking to avenge the sweep that the Reds had against the 1976 Yankee team in the world series that season.

The Tigers won 6 in a row and on Sep 9th they were just one game out, but they lost 10 of the final 17 games to finish 4 games back.

      1998 'Stros knock off 1917 Chisox, 90-72.

The Astros only scored 25 more runs than the White Sox, but thanks to a 31-19 record in one run games they breezed to an 18 game win in the series. The Astros were also 17-4 in extra inning games. I;m uessing that Billy Wagner must have had a big season.

Biggio with a .390 OBP and 116 runs scored. Bagwell with 129 walks and 95 runs scored. Alou with 26-110. Bell with 98 RBIs. Other than those 4 players no other player had 50 runs scored or 50 RBIs.

As I thought, Billy Wagner HUGE at 11-1 with 29 saves and a 1.63 ERA. He did not allow a HR all season. Elarton was also big at 4-1, 1.89. Lima solid at 13-10, 2.80, despite giving up 31 HRs. Bergman, Reynolds and Hampton were a combined 15 games under .500.

Campy shut down the Jints running game. They barely made 50% on steals.

2013 Red Sox dispatch with the 1983 Orioles, 89-73.

This series was neck and neck for over 100 games. The Red Sox then went on a 14-1 streak in August to pull away and take command in the series. It was a high scoring series with the DH being used in every game and 2 hitter's ballparks.
                  HTML Code:
Year Team W	L	Pct	GB	L10	Strk	RF	RA	Mgn
                  2013 Boston Red Sox 89	73	.549	-	6-4	L1	849	786 63
                  1983 Baltimore Orioles	73	89	.451	16	4-6	W1	786	849 -63
Both teas ran wild on the bases. The Red Sox had 123 stolen bases and a 73% success rate. The Orioles were even better, stealing 114 bases at a rate of 86%. The only Red Sox catcher who can throw is David Ross who is a VG. Saltalamachia is a fair and Lavarnway is a poor.

Pedroia huge at .341 with 92 RBIs. Ellsbury with 53 steals and 91 runs. Ortiz goes 27-108.

Errors were about even. Orioles turned an amazing 190 double plays. I think that's the most I've ever seen in a season.

                    #39
We have another 81-81 tie. The 1985 Yankees and 1974 Dodgers will play one extra game to decide this series. The Yankees scored 40 more runs on the season so they get the home game. The Dodgers are 34-20 in one run games,, which is how they overcame that 40 run deficit to tie the series. The Yankees were 2 games back at 79-81 and Bob Shirley (10-5) beat Tommy John (5-8) in a 3-1 game and then Ron Guidry threw a no hitter in game #162 to force the extra game as the Yankees won 5-0.

The Yankees will be going today with Phil Niekro (12-12, 4.18). The Dodgers will pitch Geoff Zahn (6-6, 3.09). The Dodgers top 2 pitchers, Messersmith and Sutton, are not available, having both pitched in the last 3 days.

End of one inning, no score. The Yankees had two on and two out but Zahn got Baylor on a can of corn to end the inning.

After 4 innings the Yankees now lead 6-0. Randolph doubled home a run and then Mattingly belted a 3 run HR, his 30th of the season. Zahn left and was replaced by Rhoden who got out out of the inning. The Dodgers are still looking for their first hit. They have not had a hit now in the last 13 innings.
