The World Series Hall of Fame - 1983 Player Election

THE WORLD SERIES HALL OF FAME - 1983 PLAYER ELECTION

It's based only on each person's world series record. This includes players, managers, executives, umpires, owners, etc....For a position player to automatically be eligible he must have had at least 25 career plate appearances in the world series. For a pitcher to automatically be eligible he must have had either 5 games pitched, or 15 career innings in the world series. Players who don't meet those minimums could be placed on the ballot in some cases. Players become eligible 5 years after their last world series appearance, provided that they are retired. So if they last appeared in a world series in 1964 and they retired after 1973, they would be eligible in 1974. If they last appeared in a world series in 1973 (like Mays) and retired after 1973, they would become eligible in 1978. For a manager, executive or owner to be eligible he must have been involved in at least 2 world series. For an umpire to be eligible he must have appeared in at least 4 different world series. Same rules for non players as far as becoming eligible 5 years after their last world series appearance, as long as they are retired. Anybody who dies before they are eligible becomes eligible the year after his death.

Candidates must get 75% to be elected. On the player's ballot voters can vote for up to 10 candidates in each election. I'll decide on the non-players ballot when I see how many candidates qualify. Player candidates can remain on the ballot for 10 years before dropping off. If they get 0 votes in any year they will drop off right away.

Now that we are up to guys who played in post season games other than the world series, please be careful when you check their stats. Just look at the world series years and totals.

We have 8 new players on the ballot this year.

    MY BALLOT

    Clay Carroll
    Rawly Eastwick
    Catfish Hunter
    Darold Knowles
    Jose Pagan
    Joe Rudi

Four from last year, Catfish Hunter and Joe Rudi. Rudi's offense is very close and he had that great play on that ball hit by Denis Menke so I gave him the nod.

Not voting for Catfish is ridiculous. He was tremendous is his first 3 WS, especially 72. Savoy, you have said yourself that he was the sacrificial lamb in 77. Omitting Catfish, shows the ignorance of looking at final stats only, and ignoring all context or individual series. Catfish should get in for his performance in 1972 alone, no matter what else he did. He won game 7 on the road. He even got a save in 74. He beat Seaver in game 6 in 73, with his team down 3 games to 2.

Yeah, you're right. I added him.

Let's talk about why you are not voting for SF Giant Jose Pagan at .324/.343/.471. In the 62 series he went .368/.400/.526.

What about Knowles, 0.00 ERA appearing in all 7 games in 1973 with 2 saves.

Start with last year's three, and add one, resulting in four.

    Clay Carroll
    Tommy Davis
    Catfish Hunter
    Jose Pagan
