Definitely the first one, no question.

Not to be trite, but I can't see any class being better than the one from 1936: Cobb, Ruth, Wagner, Mathewson, and Johnson. It's kind of hard to to that.

Cobb was always thought to be the greatest player ever, basically through Babe Ruth's death.

What about other than the first one?

I know there's a list floating around here of each year and the inductees.

    The 2nd one:

    Nap Lajoie
    Tris Speaker
    Cy Young
    Ban Johnson
    Connie Mack
    John McGraw
    Morgan Bulkeley
    George Wright
Now it is done. The story ends, and there is no way to tell it. The art of fiction is dead. Reality has strangled invention. Only the utterly impossible, the inexpressibly fantastic can ever be plausible again.

the first one was 1936 and cooperstown wasn't opened until 1939 so the 1936-1937-1938-1939 were inducted then - that would definitely be the best class

I was going to say the class of 99 with Yount, Brett, and Ryan, but I can't say that these three are better than the class of 82 with Robinson, and Aaron, so I say the class of 82.

With the retirement of Clemens, Maddux, Thomas, Bagwell, Biggio, Piazza, Johnson etc. looming, the best class may be yet to come, depending on who retires when.

You know, best of the "normal classes."

I do, however, find it funny that 1937, only the second year ever of Hall inductions, found the single least essential and worst selection in Hall of Fame history... Morgan Bulkeley. Nice to know they got that out of the way quickly.

As Im sure you all know Morgan Bulkeley has the distinction of being the only Baseball HOFer to serve in the Civil War. Its amazing how short the first few years of plaques are in terms of word count, compared to nowadays when they are packed to capacity!

I consider the first class, thats 1936, its over the wall, to be the best class ever!

Not that this is really in the running, but the 1972 induction class has an interesting mix of all-time greats:

    Josh Gibson
    Sandy Koufax
    Yogi Berra
    Buck Leonard
    Early Wynn
    Lefty Gomez
    Will Harridge
    Ross Youngs

Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.
