2-18-06 Reds sign scout Ken "Squeaky" Parker and Mike LaCoss as a minor-league pitching coach.
Wow, a legendary scouter (if that is the right term) for the Reds.
Also, I'm still waiting for Browning to get hired as a pitching coach but LaCoss might be able to the job.
Unlike most other team sports, in which teams usually have an equivalent number of players on the field at any given time, in baseball the hitting team is at a numerical disadvantage, with a maximum of 5 players and 2 base coaches on the field at any time, compared to the fielding team's 9 players. For this reason, leaving the dugout to join a fight is generally considered acceptable in that it results in numerical equivalence on the field, and a fairer fight.

as a whole, Browning isn't liked well enough around baseball to be a major league pitching coach, i mean, its taken him this long to be a spring training instructor. and then there's the entire we don't have any basis to think Browning would be a good pitching or a bad pitching coach for that matter. *shrug*

that's great. too bad they didn't do it with Jimmy Haynes when he came in nearly 40 pounds over weight in 04. as far as Hancock pitching goes, he's just another in the pile of mediocrity that is Reds' pitching.

at the very least, this gives the Reds a slightly more managable number of pitchers this spring.

2-19-06 The Reds sign RHP Luke Hudson to a major league contract and assign him to class AAA Louisville.
yes, you read that right. a major league contract but going to Louisville. Hudson cleared waivers and accepted assignment to AAA, but according to the rules governing baseball, the Reds were required to give Hudson a major league deal to do it. all it really means is that Hudson will be making the major league minimum in AAA (which means he's one of the highest paid players in the minors).

2-19-06 Reds name Billy Hatcher as first base coach.
Hatcher might also be personally working with Pena on reading flyballs from left field. but a big underlying matter is at hand...Hatcher was 1990 Red, was the first base coach for D-Rays, and Castellini loves Sweet Lou. anyone else see Narron being removed from his manager post next year?

i suppose it's the spring transaction thread now

3-15-06 Reds claim 2B/OF Matt Kata off waivers from the Phillies.
well, this is either one of two things. a prerequisite to one of the other 2B possibilities being traded/released (please be Womack), or Krivsky just wants Kata because it was his influence that drafted Kata in 1996.

3-15-06 Reds release RHP Allan Simpson. (and though it happened last week, they also released RHP Luke Hudson and RHP Bubba Nelson)
Simpson was released to make room for Matt Kata on the 40-man roster. Hudson was released because he's a wilder and injured version of Simpson. i can't figure out why Southern League All-Star Bubba Nelson was released though. he had a sub 3 ERA, 3:1 K/BB rate, and 10+ K/9 rate until the final month of the season in AA last year.

3-20-06 Reds trade OF Wily Mo Pena to the Boston Red Sox for RHP Bronson Arroyo.
Arroyo kinda did what Aaron Harang's did the last years...been a good pitcher and then hit a wall not long after the All-Star break. assuming his stamina improves and his K rate goes back to what it was in 04, Arroyo should be about as effective as Harang was last year. though, i would have liked to have seen Pena bring in younger guys.

3-21-06 Cincinnati Reds trade SP Bobby Basham to the San Diego Padres for C David Ross. RHP Jason Standridge is designated for assignment.
unless they're sure Basham's shoulder is toast, i really don't see the point of trading for a no stick poor defensive catcher. even with it seeming that a trade of LaRue or Valentin is looming it doesn't make a lot of sense, so both Miguel Perez and Dane Sardinha are no stick outsanding defensive catchers. Standridge will probably accept assignment or end up in Kansas City.

3-31-05 Reds claim LHP Jonathan Coutlangus off waivers from the Giant and option him to AA Chattanooga. Grant Balfour is placed on the 60-day DL to make room.
Coutlangus is a converted OFer who's career path is somewhat similar to Brian Shackelford's career, though early on, Coutlangus appears to be a more talented pitcher than Shackelford. last year in High A Coutlangus in 77 innings pitched had a 3.04 ERA, 64 H, 3 HR, 29 BB, 79 K's.

I still haven't figured out why Denorfia isn't on the Reds roster. He plays very solid defense which is something we really suck at(lead the league in most errors)...I guess Narron and Krivsky are obsessed with washed up veterens.

Ravenlord, you got to remember that Krivsky is trying to win the IL championship. Thats why we have all these good minor league guys in AAA Louisville.

i didn't even know you could do a same day transaction like that. i thought a player had to stay on the active roster for at least 10 days. it's about bloody time Shack returns, he should have came north after his spring campaign.

4-24-06 The Reds acquire OF Cody Ross from the Dodgers for a Player To Be Named Later. Designate Tony Womack for assignment.
He may hate Denorfia, but at least Krivsky saw that there's more value in giving Womack $1.1 million to not play than to play.
