Thread: OUR Ebbets Field History!

  1. #261
I visited New York at the end of August to go see a game at Yankee Stadium.

I'm a Dodgers fan and I was staying with some friends in Brooklyn. I couldn't believe that people are still bitter about the whole thing.

Needless to say, I didn't go around yelling that I was from Los Angeles.

    Lovely borough though.

    February 23rd

Today marks the 49th anniversary of the demolition of Ebbets Field. A very sad occasion indeed. Have a cold Schaefer today (or maybe six), and perhaps listen to an old tape of a Brooklyn ballgame. Peace.

Thanks for this observation, Pete (I was away from the computer on Monday).

On a different note, Red Sox catcher Josh Bard notes today in the Boston Herald "that his father, who grew up in Norwalk, Conn., once played in a high school all-star game at Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers."

I tried to confirm the date on this, but the best I could do so far was a 1999 article in the Detroit News quoting a man named Norman Brill from Oceanside, NY, who said he hit a homer in such an event more than 40 years before." This puts it some time in the 1950s, which would tally with Mr. Bard's age.

I didn't see any reference in Bob McGee's book. I'll take a look at Joe McCauley's (maybe he can chime in).

    Relics of Ebbets Field

Another little fact I hadn't known, courtesy of the book "Brooklyn!" by Ellen Marie Snyder-Grenier (published by the Brooklyn Historical Society).

    Page 253 states:

"Some of the large blocks, stone, and other debris from Ebbets Field became filler for land in Mill Basin when new homes, especially those along the waterway, were built in the early 1960s."

Here's an article in today's New York Post about a Little League game that apparently took place in September 1959:

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/05312009...rie_171764.htm

This could well be the last baseball game at any level in Ebbets. However, I'll drop a line to the author, who is not aware of the Negro American League action with Satchel Paige that happened in August.

I have researched the vast majority of published ballpark books, all the websites I could find (including this one of course), and the Hall of Fame looking for outfield shots of Ebbets field from the late 1920s and early 1930s right before the outfield grandstand was constructed. The best I could find were from 1920. Anybody got any later preOF grandstand shots?

There are a couple of recent stories about how the L.A. Dodgers have honored several members of the 1957 Little League World Series champions from Monterrey, Mexico. Apparently this team got to visit Ebbets Field on August 25, 1957. The lads became Dodger fans thanks to rebroadcasts in Spanish of their games.

    http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/mexico/56760627.html

This article has a picture of the team with Vice President Richard Nixon. I wonder if one exists of them at Ebbets?

    1957 Monterrey at Ebbets Field

Here's a news article from August 26, 1957. The original is blurry.

Former Astros SS Hector Torres also played on the Monterrey team.

I posted this story about Bill Bevens and his famous near no-hitter in the 1947 World Series in this thread because it took place at Ebbets Field.
What I really like about it is the photo of Bevens and Joe DiMaggio -- they're in some cool Ebbets tunnel. It makes me think of Victor Hugo's descriptions of subterranean Paris.

The Brooklyn Dodgers had plenty of their own "close but no cigar" stories too.
    I met Frenchy Bordagaray's grand daughter at a B and B in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Casey Stengel had a famous line about why they got rid of Frenchy, "There's only room enough on this club for one clown."

    In today's Brooklyn Eagle (http://www.brooklyneagle.com/categor...=33&id=38849):

The Brooklyn Historical Society, 127 Pierrepont St., Brooklyn Heights, is showing the exhibit “Home Base: Memories of the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field.” This exhibition focuses on the connection between Ebbets Field, the Dodgers and the Brooklyn community.

Here's a link to the BHS page about the exhibit:

    http://www.brooklynhistory.org/exhib...home_base.html

I'm a little late to the party, since it's been shown since June 3, but it runs through April 24, 2011.

Here is a picture of the model of the Buckminster Fuller dome that The Big O had in mind for downtown Brooklyn.
Below it is a YouTube clip of the sad end of Ebbets Field. I figure it's from the Ken Burns documentary (which I haven't seen) because of talking head Billy Crystal.
