No. They should be natural finish, flame tempered. Also, can you tell me how far out you are on an another order of P72's?

I went through our system and I can't find an order for you for these bats. Hell, there isn't an order for G176's on the books. How long ago was this? The last thing I had for you in the system was from '06.

Chuck and Charlotte aren't in today but tomorrow when they're in I'll ask them if they might have labeled them differently. Like I said I can't find anything under your name or through Texas for those models.

I spoke with Chuck today and he said the same thing. Doesn't surprise me, I get told an order of bats are going in a few weeks ago and it never happens. Right now MAX bat has a 3 day turn around and you guys are 3 weeks out, I'm going to order some of their P72 model and see how they are. If I don't like them I'll put an order in with you.

So did your agent order them through Chuck or did your equipment manager? Like I said, the order was never on our books and we don't turn down orders. We'll let them sit for a while on the books but we won't turn them down I'll talk to Charlotte tomorrow and we'll call Texas to see what happened.

Max makes an excellent bat, I'm sure you'll be happy with their product. Though you might want to try Phoenix Bat Company. Their P72 copy is one of the best I've seen. They use the same CNC lathe that we do.

No, please don't call Texas. Thats the last thing I need is an equpment manager breathing down my neck for stepping on his toes. I'll check on it.

Max is going to make a few variations of the p72 for me. I'm not a big fan of maple, so we'll see how they go. Was I correct in saying you are at a 3 week turnaround right now?

Right now for the Custom program we are about 4-6 weeks out. For the standard models we are 2 weeks. For Pro we are at a 4 day turn around.

If you do order from us send me an email and I'll have our turner pull the order to the top of the list.

Wait, so if I put an order in with you, how long will it take to get them to me? 4 days?

You'd still have to order through Chuck, Charlotte, or Tiffany. Send me a pm after you order and I'll look up your order number and have Pro bat pull the order.

I can't take orders but I can change thier scheduling

Jack of all trades...master of none!

Tomorrow should be interesting, my brother gets back from his trip to Rawlings production facility. I don't think we'll learn anything new but it is good to check out the competition every once in a while. Though, I still believe our worst enemy is ourselves...

My agent should have the order put in through sluggerpro.com tomorrow. Keep your eyes open for it...The order should be (3) p72's 34-41 cupped. Flame Tempered. And do me a favor and have the guy REALLY flame Temper them. I like the grains real dark.

I have recently started turning some bats. I use a regular delta lathe which takes me about 20 to 35 minutes to turn a bat. I would like to take my batmaking a step further, but don't really have the 25-40k for a CNC. Any other options? Also, I am paying $18 a billet right now. Anyone know of a cheaper supplier? Thanks. This thread has been great to read.

Is that 41 oz.? That's quite a hefty bat...

I'm pretty sure he meant 31oz. the rest of his orders have been

I don't even think we have heavy enough timber to make a 34/41 P72. That would be some solid wood.

Hmm... I know several people are using T-5's for turning or other type of tracer lathe. You can use Hemple's but most people don't want to go through the re engineering we do to them to get them running bats. If I remember correctly you might want to call Ironwood Bat Co. They have an extra tracer their trying to sell.

On another note, what CNC's are you guys buying for under 50 grand? Just wondering since our Locatelli was 250K.

Wow! $18 for a billet! You definitely want to shop around for a new billet supplier. It's a shame we got out of that business, it was pretty good to us.

    BMH,

$18 (maple) not that far off from sawmill price per billet.. Derek must be buying from middle man/woman charging $2-4 per billet.

There is one guy who sells a CNC for around 50k in the states.. It's called the TomCat, I think.. Not much in features, but basic..

LVS's Locatelli, how fast does it turn a bat.. In some old videos, your tracer lathes chewed through a billet in about 3 secs, what type and number of knives did those lathe use.. Were they Mattison lathes?

Really? Wow...I guess I don't know what's out there! When we were buying Beech from Europe it was $16.50 a billet including shipping.

Our old Defiance lathes would turn a bat in 20-25 seconds. It had a lot of knives, they were pulling the last one out when I started working there so I never got to get a good look. I do know it was very loud and took a few hours to do change ups.

The Hemple's in 30secs. The Locatelli takes anywhere from 35-50 depending if I use the turret knives.

Wow, 50 seconds? I would like to find a machine to get me down to around 5minutes per bat. Something in the 10-20k range. Anything like that out there?

Did the order come in yet?

That is fast.. D, for that range, your looking at a hydraulic tracer lathe used.. I direct your attention to www.exfactory.com. Checkout lathe section..

BMH are there any new video of these machines in action? I would love to see that.. What rpm's are billets turned? How many knives? Does the Hemple use a traveling steady ? Does billet need to be trimmed to get through bearing?

Um...nothing that's really on the net showing just the lathes. Here's a video from "Coolstuffbeingmade" starring our museum director.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfGFgB3LjsY

I'm thinking the Hempel's spin around 2500rpm, my cnc varies between 2800-3300 depending on where it's cutting on the bat.

The Hempel's use three knives, two back knives, a ring and steady rest..the video kinda shows it. The Locatelli uses a stay ring, and three knives. Kind of sad, we paid 700+ for the cnc knives and the first thing we did was junk them. Wrong angles and wouldn't let you cut fast...

I came across that video before.. very nice... my lathe uses the basic HSS gouges.. I turn at about 20-25% of the carraige speed.. Bat takes less than 2 min to turn. Rep told me that I can go faster after handle until end of bat. But I don't want to dull the tools to quickly.

I am getting quote on tatung tools, which should be good for 200 bats and I could crank up the .. I did not opt for V-Gouges, simply because I don't have $2000 for the grinder necessary to sharpen.

That's our only problem...we still sharpen all our gouges by hand. The knob knives are the same but are made so that it's really hard to mess up the shape.
The Locatelli uses a Centaro sharpening machine but we finish them by hand. The edge it leaves on the knife isn't the best straight off the wheel.
