please tell me if this is wrong:
the senators were the first to extensively use lefty and righty relief specialists in 1927 and '28
firpo marberry (righty) and garland braxton (lefty) made 185 relief appearances those years and saved 34 games
any earlier examples? - thanks
--Marberry was probably the first guy ever assigned to the pen because fo his talent, rather than his lack of it from either side. I think having Firpo come out of the pen was the singular advantage that helped the Senators win back to back pennants in 24-25. Whats odd is the practice of assigning a quality pitcher to the pen and using them in high leverage spots didn't really catch on for decades in spite of the Sens success.
mcgraw used Slim Sallee, Claude Jonnard, Red Causey and Virgil Barnes from 1921-24 but only sallee was lefthanded and he was only used in 1921, the others came in 1922 or later
--McGraw had a "relief ace" more often than not from his early days of managing. However, they generally got the job because they couldn't crack the rotation not because he wanted a stud in the pen. Marberry probably had the best stuff on the Senators staff when they stuck him out there.
yeah - marberry didn't start pitching until he was 21 years old and for a long time only had a fastball - a heavy fastball - i guess that's all he needed
