    Jeter's "Fantastic" Play on 5/11

Did anyone just think he should have ranged over and not fallen down? It was hard, but it was reachable within a few quick movements and strides. And wouldn't that make it a better SS play, though appearing easier?

Jeter's weak to his right, correct? Or is it his left range?

The throw wasn't very good or bad. Adequate for a knees throw, but not an accurate one in the end. He probably should have held it, being on his knees and without a great 1B. That would give up an out, but possibly save one. At least Cairo kept the runner at 1st.

I just don't see how one can look at that play repeatedly and gush about it. Sure if he makes a knees throw the runner is out, but would Aparicio or Ripken need a knees throw?

JM: Only did that for a couple of years and then we had a conspiracy so it kind of turned me sour. Our league's commissioner, Lew Ford(notes) at the time, was doing some shady things that ... I'd rather not talk about [laughs].
DB: Isn't he in Japan right now?
JM: I don't know where Lou is right now. He's probably fleeing the authorities [laughs].

Close only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades. The guy is overrated defensively due to playing in New York.

Actually his left side is his weak side. Lately, however, it seems as if has concrete in his shoes no matter which side he goes to. A lot of his "excellent" plays where he backhands the ball and makes the long throw to first are balls that most shortstops wind up fielding cleanly in front. I am a Yanks and Jeter fan, but his fielding ability is questionable at best.

So to answer your question, I don't think is capable of ranging over.

That's a little ridiculous if you ask me. His fielding is overvalued because he has the ability to make simple plays look complicated--it has nothing to do with NY. Trust me, players who excel in NY garner more attention than if they play anywhere else, but his defense is not really his claim to fame in NY (although the average Jeter apologist thinks he is an above average shortstop, where he is about as average as a shortstop can be in the field).

    Darn NY bias

Aaron Rowland just perhaps made the most brillant catch in MLB history (yes better then Mays) and you guys are talking about Jeter

    lol
"Statistics are like a woman in a bikini, it shows alot but not everything"

TROY -- Mayor Harry Tutunjian's pitch to get Major League Baseball to pay on a nearly 125-year-old debt by getting the San Francisco Giants to play an exhibition game at Bruno Stadium has raised some interest on the West Coast.

Freaking politicians, I have a meeting to discuss this, and he takes credit for my idea

Well whats the point, so do we fault him for not having the range or quickness that Aparicio or Ripken had. Thats the best he could do. It was not an accurate throw to first and difficult for Cairo but not imposible for Cairo to hold on to.

IMO,Jeter has always pulled stunts like this.Like last year (I beleve) where he caught the ball near 3rd base and ended up in the 3rd rows of the stands. He could of easily stopped,or atleast ducked and hit the padded wall instead of the cold, hard seats.

It was raining quite hard. The ball was obviously wet and slipped. You guys are awfully critical of last years Gold Glove recipient with 4 rings.

Now your saying he hot dogged that play, dove into the seats to make it look good. Always pulled stunts like this. I see those Red Sox hanging there, you wouldn't be biassed in your take on Jeter.... would you.

I'm not saying he hotdoged it I'm just saying he probabily could of stoped in time.

Thats hard to tell at times. I saw a similar play a few weeks ago, don't recall the player but it almost appeared to me that he could have stopped. Did not go headlong into the seat as Jeter did but went into the second or third row.

Okay, Jeter has two Gold Gloves for what they're worth, but we could just look at this year since the awards are for the past. I mean could Colon even get his Cy Young yet? Maris wasn't the quality of HR hitter Dick Allen was.

I don't care how a SS gets routine outs, David Eckstein does fine, barely beats runners but slow-medium guys are beat often enough, easily. Then if their range is very good, that's very good as well. Jeter's play should just get a fair assessment. Heck, he probably thought mroe accurately of it than Boomer Berman or Morgan.
