    Historical Photos Discussion

    OK, brothers.

Randy and I have finally gotten the Historical, Archival Photos constructed. It took a MASSIVE effort by us, but we hope it was worth it to you. I stickied both the archive/poll for the moment.

I wanted to let it be prominently featured, so as to attrack online traffic for us. Randy and I would like very much to hear your feedback. About what % of the shots had you not seen in the books before now. What were your favorite shots, so I can look for more of that kind.

I will periodically add the the collection, as I find other shots which meet my standards.

Also, which players do you consider it a crime to omit. I know I omitted a large number of worthy players. I freely admit that. But many players are hard to find good action shots. Especially the Pre-1900 players. Virtually impossible to find good shots of Ewing, McAleer, Lange, Bergen, Gore, Ryan, Rusie, etc. And believe it or not, it was hard to find good Hornsbys too. Don't know why. And by that, I refer to GOOD Hornsbys.

That is why many shots are of horrible quality resolution. I'd rather have a terrible shot of a player in action, than a pristine one of him just standing there.

So, Randy and I would really love to hear your feedback, constructive criticisms, etc. Thanks, guys.

I think we have a world-class gallery. And from the looks of how many have viewed it already, over 20,000, the rest of the online baseball community concurs.

    I think it's great.

The only critisism I have concerns the quality of some of the photots. I've seen some of the same photos on-line in much better condition.

    That includes the clarity.

RS, by all means! If you have access to higher quality shots that's all the better.

Thanks, RS! I really appreciate that. Just post them here, and we'll plug them into the place where the poorer quality shot is. That is good cooperation! Just appreciate that kind of help more than you can possibly know.

No, I can't. My all-in-one printer/scanner/copier is broke and I can't afford to fix it.

To accomplish this project, I had to take all of my photos in my scrapbooks, and mail them to Randy in Oregon. Randy did all the work. In fact, he went out & bought a scanner just to accomplish this project for Fever members.

I sent 3 large batches of photos out.

The only Wagner I know in a Louisville uniform is in the biography by Arthur D. Hittner, page 130. If anyone has that book and can scan it into the gallery, that would be alright.

I found this looking on Yahoo. Guess there's not alot of pictures of Honus in his Colonel days because that was the only photo I could find of him anywere.

Anyways the Photos are great to look at at. I would give it a 5 out of 5 stars. Thanks for posting them all.

Bill, I know I've already told you this, but you've done a great job (You too Randy)! Some (very few) of the images aren't of the best visual quality, but I still enjoy them all.
A lot of people say this honor validates my career, but I didn't work hard for validation. I didn't play the game right because I saw a reward at the end of the tunnel. I played it right because that's what you're supposed to do, play it right and with respect. If this validates anything, it's that learning how to bunt and hit and run and turning two is more important than knowing where to find the little red light at the dug out camera. - Ryne Sandberg

Thank you so very much, Ernie Banks#14. I sincerely appreciate your feedback.

If you have any abilities to improve the qualities of my shots, or can find the better photo online, or in a book, or anywhere else in the world, I would be very much appreciative.

I have done this not for myself, but to share these images with Fever, and, by extension, the world. I want these images to be tools we can use to FEEL how these players played the game. There is little I won't do to assist this site to be all it can be.

I am extending an open invitation to anyone with the tools/skills to improve any shot on the Photo Gallery. Just post them there, and Randy and I will see to it that they will get to where they need to go. Thanks a million for assisting Randy and I to present these great images to the world.

    Bill:

Many, many thanks to you and Randy for a wonderful job! I love this thread! Wouldn't change a thing about it. For those of us who love the "old days" of baseball, this is a God-sent. I've been through the entire thread a number of times and will continue to do so in the future. And I've referred the thread to friends who love baseball history. This may be the greatest collection of old baseball "black and whites" in existence. If there's a better one, I'd like to see it.

This is a wonderful accomplishment and you guys should be proud. Thanks again!

Most of these have been collecting dust in my scrapbooks since the 60's, and others since the 80's. Hearing your kind words makes all the work so worth while.

I am continuing to search for the original photos online. If anyone can fine the original photographs, I'd be so grateful, you just wouldn't believe it. So thanks so much for your enjoyment of these images. I am trying to have that era come alive for us here. Were you able to hear the original Hall of Fame Dedication, Gary? That was cool too, I hope.

Great job guys. I especially liked the HOF photo from 1939. How come Ty didn't show up?

One other tiny (but tedious) suggestion. It might be nice to have an index with links in the first page for the players/teams/individuals pictured. Make easier to find a specific person. Of course, I know that wouldn't exactly be a lot of fun to compile, but its just a suggestion.

That's one of my favorites too. Did you notice how Ruth has his dress socks rolled down..musta been a scorcher that day. Anyway, I believe Tyrus was stuck in traffic and showed up around 10 minutes after the photos were taken or something.

I did notice the socks, and chuckled at it. Somehow it just fits Babe's persona.

Interesting they didn't wait for Tyrus. You'd think they'd wait for the greatest ball player ever.... Oh wait we're not supposed to debate that stuff here, are we Randy?

I have him riding shotgun. Every now and then he reaches over and tries to grab the wheel

All good things to those who wait. Patience my good man. I am now cleaning up the thread. Finishing the captioning. I'm planning a very detailed index, so everyone can look up the original source material.

I've read that Cobb was deliberately late because he did not want to be photographed with KM Landis.
