Well, Brian's numbers look good enough for me to wonder why Texas is sending him off. Any ideas?

  3. #53
No I was wondering the same thing when I saw his numbers, but seems like a fantastic pickup from by the Sox. Especially since we only gave up a single A pitcher.

When you consider Mendoza's numbers at the major league level, I'm afraid I smell a rat.

Either way, hopefully he can still pitch better than Seanez. It should help our pen a little. He seems promising, unless he's hiding an injury, but that doesn't seem like it's the case... Hopefully.

Yes...it's the injury thing I'm worried about. Could be that Texas is just in need of a starter, and they're losing a reliever. Hope it's as simple as that.

As the day progresses, I feel more and more that Kevin Youkilis will be playing 3rd base and Mike Lowell will become a Padre.

This is from ESPN.com MLB Insider:
    Lowell in a three-way deal?
Jul 31 - The Red Sox are working a pair of three-team deals involving third baseman Mike Lowell, two Boston newspapers report.
According to The Boston Globe, the Red Sox are discussing a deal with Tampa Bay and San Diego that would bring Devil Rays infielder Julio Lugo and Padres setup man Scott Linebrink to Boston, with Lowell going to the Padres. The Devil Rays presumably would get prospects from one or both clubs.

The Boston Herald reports the Red Sox are attempting to strike a three-way deal with the Rockies and Padres. Boston would acquire Colorado first baseman Ryan Shealy and a starter.

Where would all this leave Lugo?

deadline is just around the corner....

From the Globe's Gordon Edes: "It flies in the face of Terry Francona telling third baseman Mike Lowell last week on the West Coast that he would not be traded, but according to a major league executive who said he spoke directly with one of the three teams involved, the Red Sox are working on a three-way deal with Tampa Bay and San Diego in which they would end up with Devil Rays infielder Julio Lugo and Padres setup man Scott Linebrink, with Lowell going to the Padres. The Devil Rays presumably would end up with prospects from one or both clubs. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein will not comment on trade rumors involving the Sox and one of the teams involved quickly dismissed the rumor. Another major league executive confirmed the Padres' willingness to trade Linebrink, and it is well known that San Diego has been seeking a third baseman. The Padres had offered Linebrink to the Braves for Wilson Betemit, the source said, but the Braves instead traded Betemit to the Dodgers for another reliever, Danys Baez, plus infielder Manny Aybar. The Blue Jays, who have been in the market for a shortstop, had been in talks with the Devil Rays regarding Lugo, although GM J.P. Ricciardi said [Sunday] morning he was out of the Lugo sweepstakes. A Red Sox source said last week that while the Sox liked Lugo, they expected to have more interest in him this winter if he becomes a free agent."

I have a feeling this is going to happen and NO i don't like this trade at all.

I;m assuming that if lowell leaves Youk will be moved to 3rd, Lorertta to first, Lugo to 2nd and Gonzo will remain at SS.

All we can do is cross our fingers and hope this doesn't happen.. does anyone out there really think that this trade is gonna help us in the end?i certainly don't.

Sox, Braves had talks about Jones
The Lawrence Eagle Tribune's Rob Bradford reported on Boston sports radio station WEEI today that the Red Sox and Braves on Sunday had talks about bringing slugger Andruw Jones to Boston. Bradford reported that the Braves had asked for Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, and Craig Hansen in return for Jones (who is hitting .273 with 25 homers and 91 RBIs), and were turned down by the Red Sox. The deal would have left a gaping hole in the Sox rotation, though in theory the Sox could have gone out and acquired another pitcher. Jones is making $13 million this season and is under contract to make $13.5 million in 2007.

this probably won't happen.. and if it does- Theo's an idiot.

    How great would this be...

Okay fellow Sox fans, how storybook would it be for the Rocket to come back to his beginnings and the Red Sox to beat the Mets in the World Series, 20 years after suffering one of their worst losses in history? Anyone else getting excited over this idea, or am I just being too wishful? They got about three hours left to bring Roger back to Beantown...
    Back to being underdogs

I think the Mets in the WS may be a wishful thing right now..

    BUT

There seems to be a strong chance that the Red Sox and Theo will shock the world and pickup Clemens. Right now, everyone says the Yankees need to win the East because they got Abreu and Lidle. I mean there are NO leaks coming outta Boston..possibly means something big is happening..and Clemens is pushing the Astros owner to do something with him and the owner in turn told the GM to do something..I got a good feeling about this..if Clemens comes, Boston will have one of the best 1,2,3 punches..Clemens, Schilling and Beckett.

EDIT: According to Richard Justice on his SportsJustice blog:

"I'm told Drayton McLane ordered Purpura to trade Brad Lidge. I got this information from an official with another team. I would expect the Astros to deny it."

Justice also mentions that Roger Clemens is pushing Drayton McLane for help, who has in turn orderd GM Tim Purpura to make something happen.

Mets closer Billy Wagner is campaigning for Omar Minaya to bring Lidge in so Wagner can fix him.

Also, I'm told Justice was recently on 610 AM in Houston. He mentioned that if the Astros trade Lidge for Hank Blalock straight up, the subsequent move would be to swap Morgan Ensberg and Adam Everett for Scott Linebrink and Khalil Greene.

I hadn't heard any of this.
I can't imagine how strong our roatation would be with him in it.
I'd still like to know, however, what you all are basing this on...?

Clemens may be coming back to Boston..remember he said he wanted to be on a contender?

    The following is from BostonDirtDogs.com:
The source indicated that Clemens, who has a no trade clause in his contract, would not veto a trade to the Red Sox or Yankees.

According to Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle, Clemens recently asked owner Drayton McLane to make a deal to improve the team. The Astros have been trying to obtain Miguel Tejada and have put Roy Oswalt’s name out there as well as possible trade bait.

Clemens wasn’t pleased about being taken out of yesterday’s game after throwing only 90 pitches and feeling as if he could have pitched a complete game after striking out nine and walking none. He was pinch-hit for in the seventh inning with the Astros leading 5-1.

The Astros are seven games under .500 and six games out of the wild card race.

Think Clemens wishes he could make that decision between Houston and Boston over again?

Alright I've heard a couple now. The Sox were in talks with Nationals for Soriano, but that seems like a very long shot.

Also a 3 team trade with Astros, Orioles, and Sox I'd guess that Astros would get Tejada, and someone else, and we'd get Oswalt, and Orioles would get something. Again most things that the Sox are doing are very vague, but that doesn't seem likely.

The Sox were offered Andruw Jones from the Braves for Crisp, Hansen, and Lester. Apparently the Sox told them no chance, but its said that it may be Crisp, Hansen, and a mid level prospect for Jones. Still a possiblity.

    Another one:
Astros owner ordered their GM to trade Lidge, and apparently the Rangers are the front runners, with Mets and Red Sox somewhere in the hunt.

The rumors are vague because Theo has kept the holes shut from the media. The Soriano thing I read was just the Red Sox are having fun and seeing what they can do. And the 3 team thing might work but I think it could be Clemens..not Oswalt. They wont trade away their good, young arm.
