    AL Rookie of the Year

Who would be your American League Rookie of the Year at this point in the 2006 season?

Melky Cabrera- OF- New York Yankees

Hit a walkoff blast against Seattle on Tuesday night and has been huge for New York filliing in for Matsui in left.

    Francisco Liriano- LHP- Minnesota Twins

11-2 and is leading the AL with a 1.94 ERA

Jonathan Papelbon- RHP- Boston Red Sox

28 saves as the Red Sox closer. He has only allowed three earned runs all season. He has been nothing, but dominant.

Tough call because all three are deserving candidates. There is more depth in this year's AL ROY race than any season I can remember in the recent past.

    WHAT??!!???!!!

WHY is there no JUSTIN VERLANDER option? No CHRIS RAY option? No JON LESTER option? No KENJI JOHJIMA option? Johjima has been better than Cabrera thus far. Ray has been comparable to Papelbon. Lester is 5-0 thus far. Verlander is, in most people's opinion, the third choice to win.

Cabrera and his .733 OPS isn't even worthy of mention in comparison to these other guys.

A fine crop of rookies this year, particularly pitchers.

Scott Kazmir is not a rookie my friend.

I definitely think Verlander is a strong candidate for the Rookie of the Year and I put Cabrera up there to see what the reaction of the fans would be. I wanted to see if he would get some votes.

You could also make cases for Jered Weaver and Lester, but they need to have real strong second halfs for serious consideration. In the end it is going to come down to Liriano or Papelbon. Period!

  6. Melky, he has been nothing short of amazing in the field and a lifesaver for the Yankees.

Chris Ray has been very good for Baltimore and I am remember watching him pitch at the College of William and Mary a few years ago, but saying he has been comparable to Papelbon is definitely an overstatement.

His ERA is more than two points higher at 2.95 and he has given up up fourteen runs to Papelbon's 3 in over ten less innings. He has been great, but he is not in the same class as Papelbon.

You are dead on with Kenji Jojhima, he has put up far greater numbers than Melky. He is hitting .287 with 10 HR and 42 RBI while Melky is currently at .276 with 4 HR and 30 RBI. Good point!

The award is going to end like this:

    1. Francisco Liriano
    2. Jonathan Papelbon
    3. Justin Verlander
    4. Felix Hernandez
    5. Jerred Weaver
    6. Jon Lester (If he keeps up)
    7. Kenji Yohima

I don't know what in God's name is Cabrera doing in this poll.

    what

the only resoan why jhimo whatevr his name is has better stats is because he has played the hole year cabrea has only bin in 58 game he has been in johjima has bin in 90 32 more game that equels like 15-16 rbi so that is like 45 rbi 32 games is like 3 hr for him so 7 hr and a 280 avg and carbera only has 20 less at bats and ccabrea has 26 walks and johjima only has 15 haaa also cabrea has a higher obp and 6 less doubles in 32 less games plus he has more triples and stolen bases and not to mechon his arm and all his assit and only 1 so no he is defintly a good rookie of the year canidete but larinao has to win it any stater with his era as a rookie has to win it

If Melky Cabrera wins ROY for the AL, they should just get rid of the award. There are currently 11 players in the AL having a better rookie campaign than Melky Cabrera:

    Ian Kinsler
    Jason Kubel
    Kenji Johjima
    Mike Napoli
    Kendry Morales
    Francisco Liriano
    Justin Verlander
    Jonathan Papelbon
    Jered Weaver
    Joel Zumaya
Bobby Jenks (he still qualifies as a rookie)

The Q: Can the Cubs hold a 6-5 lead with 2 outs and nobody on in the 9th?

    The A: No

Could go either way with Liriano or Papelbon IMO...

I voted for Papelbon but wouldnt be suprised to see Liriano win it either...

Ray, in save situations, you may be surprised to hear, has been as good, if not better than Papelbon. They each only have one blown save, and Ray actually has the lower ERA in save situations. So Papelbon has more saves. He plays on a winning ballclub. Ray might not technically be a rookie, however. Papelbon or Liriano will win it, although Cabrera may have been the most valuable to his team, Papelbon and Liriano have, without a doubt, been the best. Jered Weaver, Justin Verlander, Chris Ray, and Jon Lester are not far behind, with Kenji Johjima winning the ROY for position players. If Jenks qualifies, he might win it.

KingJ, there have to be more than 11. I'd say more like 15, maybe even 20.

I voted for my man, Pap. But I wouldnt be suprised if it went to Liriano either.

Its going to be very close between the two.

    I'd say Liriano.

But if Pap wins it, I won't complain

I picked Liriano today. Did he win?

pretty solid rookie class I would say.
I think walks are overrated unless you can run. If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps, but the guy who walks and can’t run, most of the time he’s clogging up the bases for somebody who can run. – Dusty Baker.

Certain threads are worth reviving. If this one was to provide a "where are they now" sort of thing, fine.

It was not. That doesn't mean we need posters jumping all over the poster who revived it. That's not what is done here. Thanks.
