Who is Omar Vasquez? Maybe you mean Omar Visquel?

All good SS, IMO, in no particular order.

    Omar Vizquel
    Johnny Peralta
    Alex Gonzalez
    Adam Everett
Cesar Izturiz, when he plays SS
    Edgar Renteria
    Orlando Cabrera
    Jack Wilson
    Jimmy Rollins
    Rafael Furcal

    With Everett being the best.

Jack Wilson is insane. The Pirates infield makes me cower with fear.

IMO, the best SS maybe Jimmy Rollins followed by Rafael Furcal.

I think you were probably talking to Starks, but i just listed them in any order because i find it impossible to list them from first to last, I just belive that Everett is the best... All range stats have him the best, and ive watched him quite a bit over the last 2 years, and he is just amazing, makes tough plays look easy, glove side and in the hole. Hes just an amazing defender.

I haven't actually seen numbers, but when I have seen Jimmy Rollins play...the guy is just incredible going to the hole and up the middle.

Hands-wise though, Omar Vizquel has no equal but he's lost some range.

    Yes, he really was.

Plenty of observers say it, and though the debate over fielding stats is endless, various studies do back it up, including this book:

My own personal recollection is just how quick and agile Ozzie was. He had great range to both sides, including to his left (which is where Mr. Jeter must depart from this discussion). And when he had to dive for balls, I've never seen somebody get back on his feet so quickly. That's very hard to do.

He also was very sure-handed, especially picking up balls on the backhand -- something he practed extensively.

I think Jeter's defense is often underrated. But to call him the best is a stretch.
Smith got to Cooperstown mainly due to his glove. Regardless of whether you agree with his induction, let's assume for a moment that he deserved it. Is there anyone else you would put in there solely on his shortstop defense?

Welcome back ARod. Hope you are a Yankee forever.

Calling him average for his career is a stretch. Calling him below average for his career is a stretch as well. zcalling him above averge right now is a stretch.

Jack Wilson in addition to being an athletic stud at short makes the most crafty plays I've ever seen. He uses all of his tools, and while they may not all be as sharp as say Ozzie's range or Vizquel's hands, his application of everything he has makes something beautiful. He doesn't give up and always gets the ball out of his hands like it's a hot potato.

I hadn't seen Wilson much before, but I just saw him make a beaut. He went well into the hole, made the backhand pickup, turned, and made a zippy accurate throw to get the force at second.

The announcers then commented that Wilson felt he'd lost agility by bulking up!

This might be a bias but Johnny Mac of the Jays is amazing defensively. Makes tough plays look easy.

I don't think we disagree at all. But the title of this thread suggested he was the best. I thought that was a bit much. And I am a huge Jeter fan.

Alex Gonzalez is a better defensive SS than Derek Jeter in the 2006 season. I'd tack Vizquel, Rollins, Everett and Eckstein on to that list as well.

Id give Eckstein more credit if his arm was stronger. Its so weak, but you can tell he tries to make up for it by throwing his whole body into it, gotta love a guy like that.

id say that jeter is the best defensive ss in the majors.

As much as it BURNS me to say this...being a HUGE tribe fan... i wouldnt rank Jhonny Peralta as a top quality shortstop in the major leagues this year. 2005 he was terrific...but this year he has been a huge disapointment.

for me, i think best SS in the majors is Derek Jeter, however i dont think he is the best defensively nor the best offensively. i name him coz of his hustle and desire to win ball games.

Best defensively is omar vizquel, best offensively is A-Rod, no way hes a 3B IMO

Very true. Peralta was much better last year than he has been this year.
