Agreed, although both 1951 and 1959 would definitely be the 1950's.

Interesting that I don't see any Barry Bonds on this list.... yet.
Funny, but the most memorable home run of Bonds for me was when he hit no. 500 and his teammates basically ignored him.

    I'm not sure where I'd rank 1912. I think the top three are 1960, 1991 and 1962.

I think the single greatest moment in baseball history was the Thomson homerun. Since the regular season is much more meaninless now, there will never be a moment like that again.

I'm not sure if the crowd on Lou Gehrig Day realized that he was dying.

Game 7s, or World Series overall?

    It ain't no Maz?

Game 7s. I think the Thomson was more dramtic than the Maz moment, but not by much

You guys have some great ones, here's the best of the best:

1900-1909 Merkle was up there but that didn't necessarily cost the Giants. Because of the stage, I gotta go with Cross's groundout to complete a third straight Matty shutout.

1910-1919 I'll go when Ruth was actually sold because the 20s are a little crowded

1920-1929 Chapman was up there, but I gotta go with the Black Sox gambling being discovered/prosecuted

1930-1939 Gehrig day was up there, the HOF building was even better, night baseball was probably the biggest

    1940-1949 Jackie, hands down

1950-1959 Thomson/Campy/The Catch tied for second, but the Giants were first to announce they were moving west

    1960-1969 Maz, hands down

1970-1979 Arguably the most crowded decade. Fisk was good, Reggie probably better, Aaron probably better than that as far as feel-good moments. But Messersmith's free agency/player union probably a more important moment.

    1980-1989 Probably Kirk Gibson

1990-1999 Last out of Morris' shutout was good, Carter's home run probably better for feel-good moment. 1994 strike maybe even more important

2000-2006 Gonzo was good, but last out of 2004 WS, eighty-six years is a long time

The Giants were the first team to announce that they were moving west. They did it while the 1957 season was still going on. I beleive the Dodgers announced it either during the World Series or shortly afterward.

Excellent list IMO, RMB. I came THAT close to also listing the free agency issue in the '70s, but I couldn't recall whether it was Messersmith or Catfish, so I left it alone. I don't think it was necessarily a good thing, in retrospect, but it sure was a historic moment! Good call!

A couple 1980's events that didn't actually concern a play BY a player:
1985 World Series: The blown call at 1st base cost the Cards a championship.
    1989 World Series: The Earthquake.

If I go with the new steroid policy for 2000-2006, three of the last four decades were events OFF the field

    1970s

It would probably be easier for me to go year by year. We can't tell what was hype and what was real because we just have to have been there. I was young in the 60s, I have the best memories in the 1970s. I remember the following:

    1960s ('Nam)
    Koufax retires
    Yaz Triple Crown
    Year of the Pitcher
    McLain-31 wins
    Miracle Mets

    1970s (Big Red Machine)
    Baltimore 4-20 wins
    Plane Crash (2)
    Strike
    714
    Free agency

    Overhyped by media:
    Fisk
    Reggie

    Other:
    The Bird
    Louisiana Lightning

    1980s (Unbreakable Records -Broken)
    Pine Tar
    The Strike
    3510 K
    Rose-4190
    Rose banned
    Gimpson HR

    Other:
    Billy Ball
    Dr K
    Collusion

    1990s (Baseball is Saved)
    Oh Canada
    World Series Cancelled
    62
    The Streak

    Other:
    New Stadiums

    2000s (Japanese Invasion)
    $250M
    Roids

If you ever want to give a list of highlights year-by-year, please let me know. I wrote a poem with each year's highlights and I may have missed things

How did you know my middle name? I notice you left Victory Faust and Dodgerfan1 alone on this one, but that's just you being you. Glad you could vent your continual anger

Allow me: Although Catfish was a free-agent signee, his availability came about by a strange technicality. Seems Charley O, reneged on a contractual obligation to pay Hunter's insurance premium. Hunter definitely wanted out of Oakland, and he may very well have won his free agency the conventional way, since the process was just getting underway. But he noticed that Finley had welched on those payments, reported to the commish, who then ruled that, since a binding obligation had been violated, his contract was null and void, and he was therefore free to sign with the bidder of his choice. Technically speaking, this was an outcome that could have happened at any point in MLB history, irrespective of the free agency/reserve clause battle.

But the delicious irony? Finley made his fortune in the insurance business!!
    Thanks for listening!

He explicitly said the DiMaggio streak didn't count as a 'moment' because it was something that was sustained, but then he went on to give his moment of the '90s to game 2131 of Cal Ripken's consecutive game streak, which is also a sustained thing.

I wasn't talking about Cal's streak, per se...I was talking about that singular moment at Camden Yards, when the game became official, and Ripken ran around the field slapping high fives with the fans. To me, that was the greatest moment of the 1990s.

I thought about including the Merkle boner as the greatest moment of the 1900s...but I don't think that was a very great moment, do you? (Unless you're a Cub fan).

Well, the sale of Ruth was announced in 1920 but it was actually made in 1919.

It still wouldn't matter. 1919 and 1920 were in the same decade.
