Easy question, in your opinion, what are the most cliché baseball phrases used by announcers?

"The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and what could be again."

Their backs are against the wall.

This team is making a statement.

They just know how to win.

          They overcame adversity.

          This is a must-win ballgame.

This team is capable of scoring a lot of runs.

They have to take it one game at a time.

The players have bought into the coach's system.

          He always gives 110%.

He is a total team player.

          This team plays within themselves.

This win today was a total team effort.

This team has so much mental toughness.

He didn't have his best stuff today.

He is the heart and soul of this team.

            "He hung a curveball..."

"The pitch was a little low, and he golfed it"

All I can think of right now.

Has anybody, ever, actually used the expression "can o' corn"?

There are so many cliches I wonder it it's possible for even the best announcer in the sport to do a game without using one. It would take a really concerted effort. I'm afraid that if we list them out, some wannabe sportscaster would use it as a vocabulary list. A future Tim McCarver.

Stock boys, in order to get a can of corn, used to knock it off with a broom and easily catch in their big aprons. Hence a "can o' corn". At least that's the story I've heard.

Sure, hear it quite often during the season watching or listening to games.

I read the same thing as Williamsburg, on how the term "can of corn" cliche started.

                              That was a clutch hit.

                              It's gone, home run!
