Face of the Franchise: Arizona Diamondbacks

This is an interesting one, as I think there's really only three choices you can put here.

    OF-Luis Gonzalez (1999-2006)
    SP-Randy Johnson (1999-2004, 2007-?)
    SP-Brandon Webb (2003-2006)

I can see a vote for Gonzalez, their longest tenured player, and who had that awesome and memorable 2001, his best season, and capped it off with the winning hit in the World Series.

Then there's Johnson, who had arguably the best 4 year peak ever, all for the D-Backs, and he's there right now and will probably win his 300th game as a D-Back if he stays healthy.

And Brandon Webb. He's been a pretty good pitcher, just won a Cy Young, and is the young leader on a young franchise.

Randy Johnson, but Gonzo is close.

I chose Gonzo - but considered writing in a vote for Matt Williams

Gonzo, but Craig Counsell strikes a note with me too.

Ask me in 10 years. I suspect it may be Brandon Webb.

I alsot almost voted for Gonzo. Not only was he there the longest so far, but when I think of the World Series, I don't think of Johnson's great performance, I think of Luis Gonzalez jumping in the air and Matt Williams/Jay Bell at home plate. However, I just had to go with Johnson because of his 4 Cy Youngs. Close though, very close for me.

I'm also with you on that HWR. However, that depends all on how guys like Tracy, Snyder, Young, Drew, and Jackson do. If one of those guys is still with them in 10 years and performs how their supposed to, it will be extremely close.

My honest guess will be that if you ask me again in 10 years it'll be someone we haven't even heard of yet.

The franchise has no face. Maybe the closest thing it has to a face is Bob Brenly.

Well, in ten years, I assume it'll be one of their homegrown studs like Stephen Drew, Chris Young, Justin Upton or Carlos Quentin.

Or Brandon Webb, if he keeps up the pace and doesn't depart via free agency.

For now, I'd select Randy Johnson.

Sure, nice guys can win - if they're nice guys with a lot of talent. Nice guys with a little talent finish fourth and nice guys with no talent finish last." --Sandy Koufax

Is Sparky Anderson face of the Reds?

Is Connie Mack face of the A's?

  16. I`ll say Gonzalez but tentatively. Johnson has a case to.

    Stephen Drew begs to differ.

Jackson and Henderson didn't play for the Philly A's though.

What's your point? Last time I checked, it's the A'S! Not Kansas City, Philly, or Oakland. The A's. Who's the face of the A's franchise?

If you went through the Original Faces of the Franchise thread, we're seperating some franchises by Team Location.

    For Example:
    Washington Senators 1901-1960
    Minnesota Twins 1961-2006
    Washington Senators/Texar Rangers 1961-2006
    St. Louis Browns 1901-1953
    Baltimore Orioles 1951-2006
    Philadelphia Athletics 1901-1954
    Kansas City/Oakland Athletics 1955-2006
    Brookly Dodgers 1884-1957
    Los Angeles Dodgers 1958-2006
    Boston Braves 1876-1953
    Milwaukee Braves 1954-1965
    Atlanta Braves 1966-2006

St. Louis Browns - George Sisler
Boston Braves - Kid Nichols (although Rabbit Maranville was probably more popular)

I'm sure Dudecar will agree with me when I ask that we all stay on the topic at hand which is th D'backs. I'm sure we'll get to other teams in time but until then this thread is for the Arizona team.

With that in mind I voted for Gonzo. After the seventh game of the '01 series he will be my face of the D'backs. In my mind one does not need to be the best player in franchise history to be the face of, being recognised and loved by a fanbase has more to do with it than just stats.
