Hey, hey, hey. Rick van den Hurk did a great job again last night. Pitching five innings vs the Cards, allowing no runs and lowering his ERA to 7.15.

I realize that he is still not there, but this looks promising.

Vanden Hurk pitching against the Giants tonight, could he become part of one of baseball's most celebrated(depending if you live in San Fran or not) moments?

German pitcher Randy Gessman has started playing for the GCL Twins and so far here's some stats for him. Also, he's the first German signed to a contract in 5 years.

    Nice to hear

I googled a bit and found an article in an mainstream German paper from April.

He had 20 strikeouts in his first international appearance. His mother is Japanese and he was born in Hawaii, but used to play in Germany.

That's gotta be the first player ever from any of the Scandanavian countries to get this far in baseball right?

UK player (currently playing in Barcelona), spent his first season in MiLB with the Padres affiliate Eugene Emeralds (SS A) and the Lake Elsinore Storm (Advanced A), and has been invited to the Fall Instructional League.

NDFA signed as a catcher, but did actually pitch a couple of innings for the Ems inpreparation for the Euros.

So I was looking at some stats of the players I know that are in MILB and Allessandro Maestri's year was pretty good. I wonder how the Cubs will handle him.

Maybe if MLB develops enough European players via the European academy and clinics, then a minor league system can be developed resembling the DSL or the VSL in Europe or a league the equivalent of single A.

The Mariners just signed a pitcher from the Netherlands. I think his name is Haas.

Little League Baseball and the Confederation of European Baseball are now partnering to foster the growth of European baseball beginning this year. Go to Littleleague.org

    Little league in Europe

I believe that a working agreement between Little League organization and the European Baseball Confederation has been in place since January 2007. However, its only at the coaching and organizational level. No little leagues affiliated with the EBC participate in the European tournament that sends its champion to the Little League World Series at Williamsport. I hope that the EBC leagues can participate in this tournament in the near future. I think the spectacle of the Little League World Series can be a boost to Baseball in Europe.

The team is called Herons BTW. They are from a town called Heerhugowaard.

I remember playing there, when I drove a ball into left field, went to second and thought that I could stretch it into a triple... Too bad. I was nailed at third.

It is quite a big club with nine baseball teams, three adult teams and the rest is youth.

So why don't they sign me? I am only 41, bothered by a shoulder injury that needs to be healed by surgery. I can be of some value...

Another Dutch kid signed a countract last week.

17 year old pitcher, Swen Huijer signed a seven year contract with the Boston Red Sox.

Huijer will finish his education first. In June he will start to play in the Rookie League.

Huijer caught the Red Sox' eye during a tournament in Italy last year.
