Now that I think about the play, I am surprised too. I thought that the glove was the only device that can used to catch balls (obviously hand too). I didn't think that other objects could be used to catch it. Such as hats, and a jersey in this case.

No, you can catch it however you want so long as it doesn't touch the ground or a wall.
