Demolition

In accordance with New York City law, Shea Stadium is currently being dismantled, rather than imploded.[17] Stadium fragments and memorabilia were sold to fans; the company with the rights to sell memorabilia was given two weeks after the final game to remove seats, signage and other potentially saleable/collectable items before demolition was to begin. The seats were the first ($869 per pair plus tax, a combination of '86 & '69), followed by other memorabilia such as the foul poles, dugouts and other equipment. The final piece of exterior ramps was brought down on February 18, 2009 to complete the demolition project.

After salvaging operations concluded, actual demolition of the ballpark began on October 14. On October 18, the scoreboard in right field was demolished, with the bleachers, batter's eye and bullpens soon to follow. [18]

By November 10, the field, dugouts and the rest of the field level seats had been demolished. [19]

By mid-December, all of the Loge level seats and a good portion of the Mezzanine level seating were gone as well, leaving only the outer shell remaining.

Demolition work on the upper deck began by January 1st. By January 2, 2009, all that remained of sections 26-48 of the upper deck were the steel framework. By January 8, the steel framework for sections 36-48 of the upper deck had been completely removed; all that remained of the "Live & In Person" advertising banner at the top above Gate A was the extreme right portion with the Shea Stadium Final Season logo. As of January 15, the far left field portion of Shea was completely demolished and the left field upper deck (sections 25-47) was stripped to its steel framework. The remaining letters at the top of the ballpark behind home plate ("ADIUM") were taken down on January 21. Approximately two-thirds of the stadium's outer superstructure was gone by January 24.

On January 31, Mets fans all over New York came to Shea for one final farewell to Shea Stadium. Fans took a tour of the site, told stories, and sang songs.[20] The last remaining section of seats were demolished on February 17, and the remaining structure (two sections of ramps) was torn down on February 18.

If anything, Yankee fans should be sad about the demolition of Shea Stadium. It's the place where their last World Series Championship was clinched. Come to think of it, out of the four championships that the Yankees won from 1996-2000, baseball is not being played in any of those places anymore. (Shea Stadium, Qualcomm Stadium, Renovated Yankee Stadium) And even in 1996, which was clinched at Yankee Stadium, Games 3 through 5 were played in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, which has long since been demolished.

And, they have A-Rod so they are definitely cursed!

True enough. And you deserve a medal, my friend. Thanks for caring about our home. Too bad we can't pass the plate and scrounge up enough money to buy the Mets. I will stay with this thread!

But KBers' post is so predictable. In all the years I went to Shea, I saw countless fans dressed inappropriately (i.e. in gear from the team from the Bronx). Invariably, they would start up with the Met fans. Never once did I ever see a Met fan start trouble. The Y****ee fan would talk trash, and end up inciting a chant from the Met fans. Now here, even as our stadium is being demolished, they can't help themselves do it one last time.

I post over there in the YS threads. Go read them, I am always good naturedly courteous. I even appreciate the history of YS. Some of the work being done by the adult Y****ee fans is remarkable. Go check out Kaplanski's 3d model, it is breathtaking. But this guy is a microcosm of why we hate those ********. I have proposed saving a piece of YS, because I am a baseball fan. Not today. Not after I read that crap. Nuke that toilet. It was a toilet in 1973, which is why it was renovated, and their time overusing Shea as forced co-tenants hastened Shea's demise. When it reopened, YS was a 1970's architectural plastic disaster. It was visited by the most obnoxious, self absorbed, "fans" in sports. The upper deck at YS has been in a permanent cloud of marijuana smoke since 1978. So inadequate that they feel the need to lord it over Met fans to reassure themselves that they are such pretty girls. It will be quite a spectacle of rended garments, gnashing of teeth, and wailing when they bring down that dump. I cannot wait.
