Very early Royals Stadium photo, May 13, 1973, Steve Hovley at the plate. The water fountains were still not operational and the slope behind left centerfield had yet to be sodded. The Twins beat the Royals 5-0 that day on a CG shutout by Dick Woodson. Steve Busby took the loss for KC, but only gave up 2 earned runs. A Royals starter getting no run support? We've seen this movie before...

After further review, I have confirmation from former Royals pitcher Mike Hedlund on Facebook that it was indeed the late "Spanky" Kirkpatrick in that photo.
