    Jose Mesa available.....your thoughts

He had some good years in Philly, in his three year stint as a Phillie he saved over 100 games, but his era this year is well over 12. I think the Phillies will give him a shot, but on a very short leash, only because of Gordon and Myers and thier injuries.

Unfortunately, Jose Mesa's seen his best days...I'm not sure he's gonna be much of a help.

My first post here... ...the first of many!

    Thanks!

My hopes aren't set high, I just have a feeling he will get a shot.
Welcome, and I loved Kruk's book.

Hope you hang around PlayJay. We need more Phillies fans here.

I don't think the team will sign him. He left on such a bad note that the would never be allowed to fail which is impossible.

At his age, I probably wouldn't take the chance even though he's been very productive since he left the Phillies.

I know this is not the topic, but has anyone read his biography on MLB.com? He supposedly has a 33 year old daughter and he is only 41. Anyway I think he's toast if he is in the AL

"The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and what could be again."

He had done well in his national league stint, but he certainly didn't too well in the american league this year. I'm not convinced he couldn't provide help for the Phillies as a set up man or something.

I noticed that when I saw a picture of his family in the yearbook when he was with the Phillies. Back then he was in his late 30's & his daughter looked like she was in high school. That was when people weren't so sure about his age. I don't know if that's been cleared up since then.

If his birth date is correct and his daughters birth date is correct, he had her when he was 8 years old. Same thing for his oldest son, Jose was 13 when he was born. The 13 would have been believable, but 8, I just can't believe that, Mesa has got to be mid 40's or upper 40's in age.

Unless she's adopted or something unusual.

You might get away with that in NL Central or West. I just don't see him being very effective in the East. I'd take him if that meant dumping Alfonseca, but definitely not having both in the same bullpen.

At best, Mesa would be a setup man with a very short leash. For the very short term.

This club's starving for help in that department. It resembles a hemorrhage.

Thanks for the kind words, folks...it's good to be here!

According to local TV, Mesa is 47.
