The 'Sports City' looks almost like an Olympic dream. With the "Maxatorium" or whatever that was. True enough was the idea as there were times when there were four arenas up and running in the same place.

Here's a site plan for the development. Orange Dome would have been the stadium. Forum a basketball arena for the Magic.

I lived very close to there 11 years ago. With all the tourism, traffic is bad enough. I couldn't imagine the headaches if this would have gone through.

it all started with the astrodome, if mlb wanted to expand to hot/humid climates a deal with the devil had to be made and the end result is at hand. also, the more that's charged for the product, the more "comforts" have to be available or those (corporations and individuals) who expect "enclosed environments" won't pay up.

Much like this wierd situation that unfolded a decade later:

Marlins' magical, mystical backstop fish! Now starting on the DL for the Toronto Blue Jays!

this has been touched on earlier in this thread, here's more to flesh out a gi-ants park in hayward near the intersection of 92 and i-80 (that is in a perpetual state of construction)...

Cool finds again! Where do the roof go on the last one?
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time.

Really nice finds Paul W! I never have seen nor knew of the 2 Denver and San Fran proposals? In what year were the Denver parks presented? I didn't move her until '82 . . . I just don't recall them, although they do have 60ish feel to them.
    Some's basturds, some's ain't, thats the score.

Interesting, this Conrad proposal was drawn up as if to be behind Union Station . . . or perhaps even the front side of Union?? . . . weird. I agree about the "charmless" aspect .. .but must admit . . . it's unique to any other proposal for any other town I've ever seen. Sure glad we got Coors instead.

What's the big deal? Some climates, you pretty much have to have a roof or dome. If Houston had built another open air stadium, people would be dropping like flies from heat exhaustion during every game. There's a reason that bug spray was the most common item sold at Colt Stadium...

That may be the worst proposal I can recall seeing. That is the ultimate "mallpark".

The mall directory would be something like this:

That Ebbets Dome is interesting. Good thing the mets didnt copy that one. As for San Fran, looks like there is parking for at least one-hundred cars.
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Yankee Stadium. Here are the lineups for todays game...

Take me out to the MALL game?

Actually, this has already started in football--the Patriots' stadium in Foxborough is now surrounded by retail stores that put the "ugh" in Foxboro for me...

There's no way that Ebbets-Dome monstrosity would have ever been actually built. That thing had all the hallmarks of the "this is what we think every building's going to look like in the future" hysteria. I mean, a stadium that had its own grocery store? Movie theater? Gimme a break.

Then again, a few years ago, who would have expected a ballpark with a swimming pool?

. . . and fish tanks. I don't know why, I dislike disneyland parks . .. but I reasonable like this (although happy it never came to fruition . .. ) . . . call me on this someday when I comment on another park . . .please! ;-) I do have moments of poor taste.

Who knows what will work, the season might be too long for people to go to 80 games a year no matter how much other stuff you put into a park.

I don't know if this one has been shown, but in terms of "out there" I think this takes the cake.

"First photos of the scale model of the new Philadelphia Stadium, officially presented by its architects and engineers on December 2 to the Mayor and City Government in Mayor Tate's office, City Hall. As a baseball park, the Stadium in South Philadelphia at Broad Street and Pattison Avenue will accomodate 60,750 fans; for football games the capacity soars to 72,599. The price tag is $25 million, covered by a bond issue voted in 1964. Foundation will begin early in 1966."
