The roof was a possibility, with the structure being permanent, ana the fabric would be pulled over during rain. This pic is it being opened. It looked like crap, so they were not going to go with it in the end. the center field smoke stack had nothing to do with the roof.

Ok, good to know. The smokestack was odd, what was its use? An actual smokestack like the bat outside old Yankee Stadium?

What is the fascination with playing baseball indoors? Baseball players are big boys. They can play outside in the elements, whether it be rain, snow, wind or hail.

Now that they have these retractable roofs, they're abusing the capability of going from outdoors to indoors with the click of a switch. I've been to both Safeco and Miller on bright sunny days, but they had the roof closed.
Holding a pitcher accountable for how many runs his team scores is like holding the designated hitter accountable for how many runs his team allows.

An individual statistic is meaningful only if it is based strictly on what the player does and not on what the other players on his team do.

It is abused to an extent, but I would say with perhaps the exception of Milwaukee the retractable roofs may be an necessary evil for the markets in which they are located. At least part of the time (hence the retractable nature of the roof).

Seeing the roof open in Miami a couple of weeks ago in the Red Sox series was a welcome sight. But with that said, I'm taking my 4 year old daughter to the game tomorrow (our first game together), and it's forecast to be a pretty rainy day. It would be a certain washout at Joe Robbie Stadium, but we'll be watching in comfort. So as much as indoor baseball is unnatural, it can be a welcome relief at times.
Marlins' magical, mystical backstop fish! Now starting on the DL for the Toronto Blue Jays!

Exactly, it really isn't about the players or the game itself. Its about insuring that you don't need to refund tickets and/or lose a gate.
Rain and the threat of rain can keep fans away even if they bought tickets. No fan in stadium = no hotdog/drink/souvenir sold.

Baseball has always been a business, only the exception that people take to it being a business has changed.

doubt it would have been an actual smoke stack. Probably just a decorative pole or something

It's a society thing - not just of baseball. Indoors is in! Fear of the sun's "poisonous" rays, terrorist attacks, too hot/humid, too cold, too average! We've SOFTENED UP! We're no fun any more. The next Six Flags park will be built either indoors or underground so it can stay open all year. lmfao....

Look at the old pure transatlantic ocean liners(1880s - 1960s). As they evolved and got biggger more of their above-deck space was enclosed. The traditional A-Deck promenade, open on the Lusitania, semi-enclosed on Titanic, was completely sealed from the elements by the time the larger Queens came along.

Pure cruise ships have reversed that trend somewhat, but those balcony cabins come at a premium.

Tying into sports venues - an increasingly higher %age of revenue seating is becoming enclosed than ever before, again at a premium. People have been conditioned, partly by sales & marketing, to demand and now expect an enclosed environment, be it the entire stadium or the seats they purchased.
RYS to NYS: "Obi-Lonn never told you what happened to your father."

NYS: "He told me enough. He told me you killed him - in the 1970s!!"

RYS: "No, I am your father..."

NYS: "No, it's not true, that's impossible!!!!"

RYS: "Look beyond my respirator pods and my upper crown; you know it to be true!

^ Or maybe fans are starting to realize that they really don't care for sunburn and heat stroke that much at all.

Why not go talk to an Astros fan who remembers Colt Stadium and tell them what you just posted?

I want an outdoor stadium in Tampa, the only issue would be the humidity at night since about 70% or so of games are 7 pm.
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time.

This Is Cardinal Field, designed in 1944 by Cardinal President Sam Breadon. Similarities in design can be seen in Busch Memorial Stadium b. 1966 (a/k/a Busch II). Look at the parabolic arches on the top.

If it had been built, it would've been the farthest south that professional baseball had ever been played in St. Louis. (Almost all of the parks were on the north side or downtown).

Those arches remind me of what renovated Dick Howser stadium at FSU did:

nice job STL fan! notice the major train yard that runs just North of Cardinal Field. I wonder if they were planning on having a major train commuting aspect? There would've been a major streetcar running up and down Grand (just like there's still a major bus line on Grand today)... that would've been a lot closer for us South Siders to get to. So you would've had East and West and North and South axes pretty well covered by public transportation.

All in all, it was better to have waited 22 years to 1966. By then, the North and South suburbs had grown stronger than the city and I 70 and I 55 were built to bring people straight from the County to the riverfront. The riverfront location, of course, was best for cultivating an Illinois following for the Redbirds.

Interesting, however, that that would've been about the fifth professional stadium that was four blocks either side of Grand. Our ancestors really saw Grand as the "main drag" of St. Louis and putting a baseball stadium too farfrom it must've been considered as suicide.

Does anyone have any renderings (if there ever were any) of the proposed Orange Dome baseball stadium in Orlando?

    This perhaps?

    I kid, I kid.

The article says there was a depiction but I was unable to find anything.

According to another article I found (Miniature Mock-up Of Ball Field Excites Big Hopes For Orlando), there was a model built of the 45,000-seat Orange Blossom Field (Orange Blossom Field would have been home to an MLB expansion team). Does anyone have any images? In the article it states that "the park model, built with tax dollars at an estimated cost of $25,000, likely will play a major role in the Orlando presentation..." For $25,000 I wouldn't expect the city of Orlando would just throw this thing away. It has to be in a museum somewhere (I hope)...

December 1965. Cross-posted with Veteran's Stadium thread (hope that's okay, mods). I like this Vet much better, sorry old Vet fans.

"Scale model of the new $25 million Philadelphia Sports Stadium at Broad Street and Pattison Avenue is displayed to officials at City Hall."

"First photos of the scale model of the new Philadelphia Stadium, officially presented by its architects and engineers on December 2 to the Mayor and City Government in Mayor Tate's office, City Hall. As a baseball park, the Stadium in South Philadelphia at Broad Street and Pattison Avenue will accomodate 60,750 fans; for football games the capacity soars to 72,599. The price tag is $25 million, covered by a bond issue voted in 1964. Foundation will begin early in 1966."

I wonder why they would feel the need to remove the left field stands for a baseball configuration?

    Do you mean right field?

If so, I was thinking the same thing.

That would have been a weird situation to have 100 feet of dead space beyond the outfield.
I see great things in baseball. It's our game - the American game.

How about a sprawling complex along with a new "Vet", from way back in December 1961, at a cost of $75 million, per source. Check out the "larger size" link for a better look at the labels for the different areas.

has more to do with the "fannies" in the seats wanting the same "comforts" of home (for an extra $30m to $100m so folks won't have to be affected by the sun or rain on their phones or tablets - heaven forbid) rather than what the players want. with player costs rising sharply, to attract the $$$'s needed owners have to attract those who are used to a sheltered public space.
