Probably one of the most famous negative players of all time is tied for the record at 5. None other then Fred Merkle has been a part of 5 losing world series teams. He even played one game for the 1926 NY Yankees who would go on to lose the World Series that year.

Rube Marquard also pitched for 5 WS losers.

Frank Demaree fell just short. He played on 4 WS losers and he played for a 5th team that lost the series but he was cut in the middle of the season that year.

Ralph Branca played for 5 different teams that ended up losing the World Series though he himself only pitched in two of the series.

Don Sutton was on 5 WS losing teams though he did not play in his rookie year world series. He fell apart at the end and they did not play him in the series. In his final year the Dodgers again went to the series and this time they won it but Sutton was cut from the team long before the playoffs.

I believe Merkle has the record with 6 for that kind of record.

But for actually playing it is 5 with:
    Fred Merkle
    Rube Marquard
    Terry Pendleton being the guys.

Elston Howard lost 6 WS but he also was part of 4 winners. Pee Wee Reese lost 6 but won one.

    Thanks for the update, Ubi.
We'll see if Terry Pendleton can add an asterisk here soon.... with a WS loss as a *manager*. He's supposedly in line...

Does any player have Kenny Lofton beat for making the playoffs(10) with 6 different teams without a ring to show for it?

Kenny Lofton has Kenny Lofton beat, with making the playoffs eleven times
Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.

Not only has he made the playoffs 11 years but all 11 have been within the last 12 years. The only year he missed was 2005 when the Phillies finished 1 game behind Houston for the Wild Card. The Phillies record against Houston that year was 0-6 so if they had won just one of those game then Lofton would be working on a streak of 12 consecutive playoff appearances with 7 different teams.

EDIT: Never mind. Didn't notice he also missed in 2000 with Cleveland
