With last night's first pre-season game against the Florida Marlins ending in a 3-3 tie, I suppose now is the time to open this thread for business.

What can I say that hasn't already been said? The Nationals open their brand new ballpark with a dramatic win over the division-rival Atlanta Braves, the winning run coming from a 2 out home run by Ryan Zimmerman in the bottom of the ninth!
President George W. Bush was on hand to resume a long-standing Washington tradition of throwing out the first pitch (high and inside to Nats manager Manny Acta) with the game starting at 8:21PM EDT.
Washington got on the board in the bottom of the first when Christian Guzman singled, advanced to third courtesy of an errant pick off throw, and was driven in by Nick Johnson's double, his first hit (and at bat) in over a year. Great to see Nick back! Johnson then scored on an RBI single by Austin Kearns.
Atlanta got on the board in the top of the fourth when Chipper Jones hit the first home run in the new park.
Things were quiet until the top of the ninth, when Atlanta scored on a passed ball charged to Paul Lo Duca.
That set the stage for Zimmerman's dramatic homer that sent 39,389 fans home happy.
Now it's on to Philadelphia to take on the Fightin' Phils.
Washington record: 1 win, 0 losses. First place in the National League East!![]()

The Nationals spoil the Phillies home opener with an 11-6 win, scoring 5 runs in the top of the ninth inning.
For the Nats, Lastings Milledge homered, Nick Johnson doubled twice and Austin Kearns, Paul Lo Duca Rafael Belliard and Dmitri Young all contributed 2 baggers.
Phillies hitting included homers by Utley & Rollins with doubles coming from Rollins, Werth & Utley.
Matt Chico pitched 5.1 innings, allowing 3 runs and 6 hits.
Joel Hanrahan, Ray King, Saul Rivera and Jesus Colome all appeared in relief with Rivera getting the win.
The Phillies used 6 pitchers with Tom Gordon being tagged with the loss.
Washington record: 2 wins, 0 losses!![]()

2-0 baby... I love it.
The Q: Can the Cubs hold a 6-5 lead with 2 outs and nobody on in the 9th?
The A: No
***********My Rant on Bud Selig***********
Selig is like a stray pigeon. Pigeons are too self-absorbed to care about anyone else. They poo on people they don't like; they poo on people they don't even know. The only real difference between Selig and a pigeon is that Selig intends to bury our heritage, our traditions, and our culture,
good start to the season, but i just wish our rotation was solidified a bit more, that's gonna real worrisome all season i feel like, but their offense is looking good so far, that's a plus, love seeing Nick Johsnon back. go nats go!![]()
"Lopez received a routine day off from the starting lineup on Sunday, though he later entered the game as a defensive replacement.
It's odd to see Lopez being superior defensively to anyone at shortstop, until you see that the Nats started D'Angelo Jimenez at short."
Tim Redding holds the Phillies to 1 hit over 7 innings (a second inning single by Pedro Feliz) and with some relief help from Luis Ayala and Jon Rauch AND a 6th inning HOME RUN from Ryan Zimmerman, the Nationals are 1-0 winners in Philladelphia.
The Nationals are held to 6 hits, but fortunately, the combined efforts of Redding, Ayala and Rauch make that one run hold up.
Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels is charged with the loss.
Washington record: 3 wins, 0 losses!![]()

The Nationals 3 game winning streak comes to an abrupt end, when despite 4 Philadelphia errors, the Phillies come up winners in a 10 inning contest, with the winning run being walked in by Jesus Colome on 4 pitches.
The game started with a 5 run first inning for the Nationals. The Phillies did manage 1 run in the bottom of the third, with the Nats answering right back with a run of their own in the top of the fourth.
The bottom dropped out in the bottom of the sixth when the Phillies came up with 6 runs to take a 7-6 lead. Washington tied the game in the top of the eighth setting the stage for the disappointing loss.
The Nationals used 6 pitchers-starter Jason Bergmann worked 5.1 innings, Saul Rivera, Ray King, Joel Hanrahan, Luis Ayala and Jesus Colome, who was charged with the loss.
The Phillies used 7 pitchers with Condrey being credited with the win.
Christian Guzman, Ronnie Belliard and Jesus Flores all hit 2 doubles apiece in a losing cause.
Now it's off to St. Louis for a weekend series with the Cardinals.
Nationals record: 3 wins, 1 loss.

"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." Rogers Hornsby.
The Nationals use 4 pitchers, the Cardinals 6, but despite 2 Cardinal errors (and 13 men left on base by the Nats) the Cardinals come out 5-4 winners in St. Louis. Odalis Perez gets the start for Washington and gives up all 5 Cardinal runs. (Schroder, Hanrahan and Saul Rivera all appear in relief.)
A 2-run Rick Ankiel home run in the first inning provides St. Louis with the winning margin.
Austin Kearns hits 2 doubles and Christian Guzman homers in the losing effort. Braden Looper gets the win for the Cards, with Jason Isringhausen credited with the save. Next game: today (Saturday, April 5th) starting at 1:10PM EDT with the final game of the 3 game series Sunday @ 2:15PM.
Nationals record: 3 wins, 2 losses.

For the second day in a row, the Nationals fall to the Cardinals by the score of 5-4.
Matt Chico gives up 4 runs in 6 innings, the 5th run being surrendered by Jesus Colome. Doubles by Lastings Milledge, Ryan Zimmerman (2) and Ronnie Belliard and homers by Nick Johnson and Jesus Flores (first homers of the season for both) fail to provide enough offense to overpower the Cards.
Adam Wainwright gets the win and Randy Flores the save for St. Louis.
Next game: Sunday at 2:15PM EDT.
Nationals record: 3 wins, 3 losses.

The top of the order is doing an OK job, but Pena and Dukes can't come back too soon, so they can get Lopez out of the starting lineup.
4 Cardinals pitchers hold the Nationals to 5 hits as the Cards sweep the 3 game series.
Nationals starter John Lannan pitches 6.2 innings and is charged with the loss, giving up 2 runs.
Kyle Lohse pitches 7 innings to get the win, with Jason Isringhausen earning another save.
The Nationals meet the Cardinals again in Washington on June 2-4.
Next series for the Nationals: In Washington against the Florida Marlins, April 7, 9 & 10th.
Nationals record: 3 wins, 4 losses.
Current streak: 4 losses.

Where to start? The Nationals commit 2 errors, leave 11 men on base and surrender 3 home runs to the Marlins as Florida beats Washington 10-7 at only the second official game played at Nationals Park. Only 4 of the 10 Florida runs are earned.
Starter Tim Redding is charged with the loss giving up 7 runs (only 1 earned). Chris Schroder, Saul Rivera, Luis Ayala and Jon Rauch all appear in relief.
Florida reliver Renyel Pinto gets the win after pitching 2.2 innings without giving up a hit and Kevin Gregg gets the save.
Doubles by Lastings Milledge and Nick Johnson and 2 Christian Guzman triples go to waste in a losing effort. Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla and Robert Andino all homer for Florida.
The Nationals left the bases loaded twice in the game, something they've done 9 times in 8 games.
Nationals record: 3 wins, 5 losses.
Current streak: 5 losses.
Next game: Wednesday, April 9th in Washington.
Let's hope that the weather, and more importantly, the Nationals bats warm up by then!![]()

When will it end? Remember that 3 game winning streak? It seems like months ago!
The Nationals drop another one to the Marlins, giving up 7 runs in the top of the 5th inning.
Jason Bergmann was the starter (and loser) last night, looking good through the first 4 innings. Then everything fell apart like an '84 Yugo in the top of the 5th. The first pitch of the inning to Jorge Cantu was delivered to the left field seats, with 9 more men appearing at the plate. By the time it was over Florida led 7-1.
Washington managed to score 1 run in the bottom of the 5th on a Christian Guzman homer but that was one of the few bright spots of the evening.
The Nationals strand another 6 runners (although, in fairness, Florida left 7-thank goodness, the score could have been even more lopsided) with the 3-4-5 hitters (Zimmerman, Johnson and Kearns) managing just 2 hits collectively.
Florida pitcher Scott Olsen pitches 7 2/3 innings of 4 hit ball, giving up 3 earned runs for his first win of the season.
Nationals record: 3 wins, 6 losses.
Current streak: 6 losses.
Next game: Thursday, April 10 vs. Florida.

Yeah, yeah, I know it's only early April, there's still 152 games left in the season, blah, blah, blah...but the glimmer of hope produced by the beginning of the season's 3 game win streak sure has been darkened by the current string of 7 losses.
The Marlins score 4 runs on 13 hits and 1 Washington error, the Nationals manage 3 runs on 7 hits including doubles from Lastings Milledge, Nick Johnson and Paul Lo Duca and a home run from Ronnie Belliard. Both Ryan Zimmerman and Austin Kearns are held hitless during the 3 games series.
Both teams used 4 pitchers with starter Mark Hendrickson getting the win, Kevin Gregg the save for the Marlins, Odalis Perez suffers the loss for the Nationals.
Defensive gem of the night: With one out and one on in the bottom of the ninth, Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson hit a long drive to left field that looked like it would barely clear the fence. Marlins leftfielder Josh Willingham managed to jump, get his glove above the fence and stop the ball from going over. He fell to the ground on his hands and knees, and while the ball popped out of his glove, managed to save what would have been a game-tying home run. Meanwhile on the basepaths, Nick Johnson, who had gone into a home run trot, had to kick it up a notch to get to second. After Austin Kearns was hit by a pitch, Paul Lo Duca grounded into a game ending double play.
Nationals record 3 wins, 7 losses.
Current streak: 7 losses.
Next game: Friday, April 11th against the Atlanta Braves in Washington.

"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." Rogers Hornsby.
The losing streak reaches 8 gamesas the Braves' Tim Hudson holds the Nationals to 3 hits in a 3-0 win.
Nationals starter Matt Chico holds the Braves to 1 run over 8 innings, the lone run coming from a Yunel Escobar homer in the 6th.
Nats reliever Jon Rauch surrendered an additional 2 runs in the top of the ninth.
Peter Moylan earns his first save of the season.
Ryan Zimmerman is now in an 0-16 slump and the Nationals as a team didn't advance a runner past second base.
Nationals record: 3 wins, 8 losses.
Current streak: 8 losses.
Next game: vs. Braves, Saturday, April 12 @ 1:05PM EDT.
"For the Washington Senators, the worst time of the year is the baseball season." Roger Kahn
"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." Rogers Hornsby.
Atlanta's Jeff Francoeur feasts on Washington pitching with 2 home runs and 7 RBI in yet another Nationals loss.
Washington starter John Lannan gets the loss, giving up 6 of Atlanta's 10 runs. Jason Bergmann yields the other 4, with Joel Hanrahan and Jesus Colome mopping up in this debacle.
The only "bright spots", if that's what they can be called, are that Ryan Zimmerman FINALLY breaks out of his slump with a double and Willie Harris tripled.
Atlanta starter John Smoltz pitched 6 innings of 5 hit ball and only gives up 1 run in the win.
Nationals record: 3 wins, 9 losses.
Current streak: 9 losses.
Next game: vs. Braves, Sunday, April 13th.
"For the Washington Senators, the worst time of the year is the baseball season." Roger Kahn
"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." Rogers Hornsby.
The Nationals FINALLY break out of the losing streak with an ugly win against the Braves. At this point, we'll take a win any way we can get it.
Braves starter Tom Glavine left the game early with a strained hamstring, and is charged with 2 runs and the loss. Reliever Jeff Bennett gives up another 3 and the Nationals manage to hang on for a 5-4 win.
Tim Redding gets the win, pitching 5 innings and giving up 3 runs. Appearing in relief for the Nats are Ray King, Saul Rivera, Luis Ayala, Chad Cordero and Jon Rauch.
Cordero made his first appearance after coming off the disabled list, getting the first 2 outs in the top of the 9th inning but then loading the bases. This brought Jon Rauch from the bullpen who earned his second save.
Nationals record: 4 wins, 9 losses.
Current streak: 1 win.
Next game: Tuesday, April 15th vs. the Mets in New York.
"For the Washington Senators, the worst time of the year is the baseball season." Roger Kahn
"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." Rogers Hornsby.
A day off, a trip to New York and the Nationals revert to their losing ways against the Mets.
4 Washington pitchers give up at least 1 run each and David Wright of the Mets collects 5 RBIs.
The Mets Mike Pelfry goes 7 innings for the win, Odalis Perez sees his record drop to 0-3 by giving up 6 hits, 4 walks and 2 runs in 6 innings.
Ray King (1), Luis Ayala (1) and Joel Hanrahan (2) surrender the other 4 runs to the Mets.
The only "offense" to speak of for the Nationals were doubles by Christian Guzman and Lastings Milledge. The 3-4-5 spots in the batting order go 1 for 10 with 2 walks (all by Nick Johnson).
Nationals record: 4 wins, 10 losses.
Current streak: 1 loss.
Next game: Wednesday, April 16th @ 7:10PM EDT.

"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." Rogers Hornsby.
The Nats get a 1 run lead in the top of the first but former Nationals outfielder Ryan Church evens the score in the bottom of the inning with his first home run of the season and the Nationals go down to another defeat, their 11th in their last 12 games.
John Maine gets his first win of the season for the Mets, evening his record at 1-1 with reliever Billy Wagner earning his second save.
Matt Chico's record drops to 0-3 for the Nationals.
Ronnie Belliard hits his fourth double and Austin Kearns finally hits his first homer in the losing effort.
Nationals record: 4 wins, 11 losses.
Current streak: 2 losses.
Next game: Thursday, April 17th @ 7:10PM EDT.

"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." Rogers Hornsby.
What a way to lose! The Nationals waste a 6 inning, 1 run, 11 strikeout effort by John Lannan and give up the winning run in the bottom of the 14th on a wild pitch by Joel Hanrahan.
The only run production the Nationals could muster was a 2 run homer by Nick Johnson in the top of the 4th with Ryan Zimmerman on base. The Nats manage only 6 hits and have now lost 12 of their last 13.
The Nats use a total of 7 pitchers, as do the Mets.
Jorge Sosa gets the win, Hanrahan the loss.
Nationals record: 4 wins, 12 losses.
Current streak: 3 losses.
Next game: Friday, April 18th in Florida vs. the Marlins who feasted on Nationals pitching on their last 3 game series in Washington, scoring 24 runs in 27 innings.

Here we go again-the Nationals use 6 pitchers and give up the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning.
Shawn Hill started for the Nats, with Jesus Colome, Ray King, Chad Cordero, Joel Hanrahan and Saul Rivera all making appearances, Rivera being charged with the loss.
Marlins reliever Kevin Gregg, the 4th Florida pitcher, blows the save in the top of the 9th giving up an RBI single to Austin Kearns with 2 aboard.
However, Saul Rivera couldn't hold the lead in the bottom half of the frame, giving up a game winning RBI to Wes Helms.
The anemic Nationals offense only comes up with one double by Christian Guzman, his 5th of the year and a stolen base by Lastings Milledge.
The Marlins get doubles from Uggla, Willingham, Jacobs and Cantu, Willingham also contributes a triple.
Washington record: 5 wins, 13 losses.
