    Pedro's 2000

Does the .238 BABIP somewhat diminish what he did? I mean compar his 2000 to Unit's 2001 and their perpherials are similar, actually Unit Ks alot more allows less HRs (rate wise) pitches more innings walks more, but his BABIP is .326 almost 100 points higher than Pedros...what does all of this mean?

Well, it depends on how many of those balls hit for outs were easy outs for the defense or outs they were lucky to get. I'd be willing to say that Pedro was such a good pitcher that batters were made to hit balls for easy outs a lot.

    Nothing diminishes that year.

Well...a .240 BABIP is REALLY low. I mean, that's pretty low, I'm not saying he wasn't a stud. He was, I just think his year with an ERA around 2.00 or so may have been a bit better...

I would say that Pedro probably benefited some from luck on balls in play, but I think if you take out pitcher assisted groundouts (assuming those were weak contact) and treat them as "given" and then realize that his LD% was also very low in 2000 (and LD have the highest BABIP by far), you will find that 2000 Pedro was a better pitcher than 2001 Randy by a fairly good way.

I was bored and looking at VORP for pitchers and noticed that they were similar and the major difference was the BABIP in their peripheral stats.

No that's good to notice those things. It can help you find cases where the pitcher definitely had some good luck on his side.

We don't have LD% easily available online for Pedro in 2000 (THT only goes back to 2003 and fangraphs only goes back to 2002) or I could tell you with certainty whether Pedro was reducing hard contact in 2000...I'm guessing if you played his 2000 season over again thousands of times, he'd have a BABIP around .270, not .240.

Also in 1999 his BABIP was about .330 and his VORP was similar so maybe that may be his best year? As to Unit's 2001 he pitched more innings, whiffed more, allowed fewer HRs (per inning) the main difference was his BABIP that season. I don't know what all this means quite yet but I'll spend more time looking into it.
