Statement by Derek Jeter on Joe Torre

"Out of my great respect for Mr. Torre, I have refrained from comment until he had a chance to address the public.

"In my eyes, Joe Torre is more than a Hall of Fame manager. He is a friend for life, and the relationship we have shared has helped shape me in ways that transcend the game of baseball. His class, dignity, and the way he respected those around him--from ballplayers to batboys--are all qualities that are easy to admire, but difficult to duplicate.

"I have known Mr. Torre for a good majority of my adult life, and there has been no bigger influence on my professional development. It was a privilege to play for him on the field, and an honor to learn from him off the field."

I think Jeter is really really bummed. I hope the best for Torre, Jeter, and all the Yankee players who have played under Torre for so long. I know they will miss him. (sheesh, I'm sounding like Torre died or something, sorry about that)

Maybe Torre can go to Seattle...

edit: it looks like McClaren is back for Seattle (which is OK with me) along with a whole new coaching staff, so Joe will have to wait till later to come to Seattle!

"He can get 10 hits in five at-bats." -Joe Torre, exasperated after seeing Ichiro hit a routine ground ball to shortstop and cross first with an infield single.

The smartest thing Torre can do is retire...play with the wife and kid, and rest on his laurels.

Says a lot for both Jeter & Torre, especially in a sporting environment when loyalty means nothing! I hope whatever Torre decides to do he is successful at it......even if it is 'just being a family man'! And I hope Jeter can be as loyal to his new manager.

It was a nothing statement. He just stated what we already knew.
"I'm happy for [Edwin Encarnacion] because this guy bleeds internally, big-time" -Dusty Baker

"If on-base percentage is so important, then why don't they put it on the scoreboard?" -Jeff Francoeur
