The really lucky fans were the ones who caught the game the day before (May 25th) in Pittsburgh when The Babe famously launched his last 3 HR's. He would officially retire as an active player just days later on June 2nd.

The handwritten date on the photo is actually wrong. From the GU Archives: "Babe Ruth and GU football coach Clipper Smith stand in the Gonzaga University stadium. On November 16, 1926, home run king George Herman “Babe” Ruth came to campus to meet the Gonzaga football team. Ruth was in Spokane for a week at the Pantages Theater. After punting the ball a few times, he met with members of the team, gave a short talk and said that he was unofficially picking them to win the homecoming game on Thanksgiving Day against Washington State College. WSC beat Gonzaga 7-0 with a crowd of over 10,000 at Gonzaga. Note: Photograph has erroneous date of 1928 written on front."

All the research I've done leads to a dating of c.1920, even though the picture of Babe is much earlier and the game was made in Baltimore.

Babe Welcomes Jacob Ruppert To The Hall Of Fame
St. Petersburg, Florida - March 8, 1930
Well...of course that's not what's really happening here. Usually a picture of shaking hands with Col. Ruppert meant that a contract had been agreed upon, in this case, Babe agreeing to $160K for two more seasons. Before purchasing the Yankees in 1915, Ruppert achieved the rank of Colonel in the Seventh Regiment, National Guard of New York. He was then elected a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives before inheriting a brewing company from his father in 1915, the Jacob Ruppert Brewing Company, which became best known for its Knickerbocker beer. Ruppert's long overdue election to the Baseball Hall Of Fame is based on his bringing Babe Ruth to New York, building Yankee Stadium and overseeing the beginnings of the Yankees dynasty in the 1920's and 1930's.

Judging from the lack of leaves on the trees, it's probably either late fall or early spring.
