Babe Ruth & The Gang Gather For Golf In Miami (February 1930)
⚾ Funny to see an active player & manager hanging out with HOF Umpire Bill Klem, can’t imagine something like that happening these days!
~ (Wire Tag) “Baseball Notables Gather At Miami For Winter Golf - “It’s a great day for golf”, were the words of celebrities of the baseball world as they gathered at Miami, Fla., before the start of the pre-season training period. Cool! Fun to read the story.
I've got a dozen different pics from that day, I only posted my favorite...The Babe looks really ill in most of them.

The Babe Takes His First Cut Of Spring Training, In Golf Clothes!
    St. Petersburg, FL - February 23, 1932
~ (Wire Tag) “The Old Maestro Feels One - Mr. George Herman Ruth, the old home run maestro of the New York Yankees, photographed at the Yankee training camp at St. Petersburg, FLA., as he tapped one out just to get the feel of the new routine. The “Babe’s” golfing outfit is somewhat out of place among the uniforms, but he is a devout February golfer and will keep at it some time yet. He is down to 220 pounds and wants to put on a few pounds. He’s still a holdout.”

this photo comes from Sports Temples of Boston website. dated 1919.
the homer according to sources other than Babe say it struck lower, the lowest being
2/3 of the way up the stand. It was not as far as one might think. possibly a 460' home run
There were others Babe considered his longest at different stages of his career. Babe actually asked them to measure his 650' homer at Wilkes Barre in 1926 which should be instructive.
His Tampa homer was measured at 551' by Melvin Webb, the next day he and 3 other writers
measured it 3 times. They got 552' 8". The deviation might be explained if measurements were taken
at the front edge of the plate and the back corner.

another homer exhibition at College Point, Long Island set up people in the outfield
to stake the landing spots of his hits. The longest measured 538', accomplished when not feeling well and
    in the rain.
A writer (Ed Hughes) stated that a homer he hit in Dunsmuir Ca. was measured by a surveyor at
604' 6" landing in a tree beyond CF. the measurement taken to the tree.

The Bambino Leaves For Braves Training Camp
80 Years Ago Today In NYC - March 3, 1935
Babe & Claire seem melancholy as they leave for what will be The Babe’s last spring training as a player. Of course, it was still being written that he would also be the Braves assistant manager, something that was true in title only.
~ (Wire Tag) “George Herman “Babe” Ruth with his wife (Claire) are shown as they boarded the train which will take them to St. Petersburg, Fla. where The Babe will start training for the coming season - his first with the Boston Braves as Ass’t Manager.”
