Richie Sexson has been released today, as of 10:39 AM PDT. Now who gets to replace him and Erik Bedard, who today was placed on the 15-day DL?
You people do realize that Bedard routinely threw 7 or 8 innings last year, right? And not because he was throwing more pitches. He wasn't.
He's having an off year with his command because he's having an off year with his back and his hip injuries. It happens to EVERYONE (well...almost everyone).
Don't judge Bedard on 15 starts as a Mariner...take the LONGER VIEW.
Anyway, I have good news. Richie Sexson just got unconditionally released.
Bedard's spot in the pitching staff will probably be taken by a relief pitcher...perhaps Jon Huber or Sean White.
The rotation is now Felix/Washburn/Silva/Dickey/Batista or Rowland-Smith
As for Sexson's spot...has a corresponding move already been made?
--Sexson's release is good news, but why not Vidro first (or both) is a big question for me. Sexson is terrible, but still outhitting Vidro. Plus Vidro has a vesting option he will reach if not benched or released in the relatively near future. I hope, but don't expect, that this leads to Ibanez getting some work at firstbase. I expect we are going to resign and it would be nice to see if he is up to being our firstbaseman net year or if DH is his real position.
Yeah...that was my first thought too Mark. Vidro needs to go...like now. I do NOT want us to have to pay his 8 million dollar extension. GUH.
OK...the replacements are Tug Hulett and Jared Wells.
I expect we'll see a lot of Hulett and Vidro at first in the short term until Vidro get's DFA'd...of course that leaves DH wide WIDE open...so...let's get Raul out of the OF please. :\
Jared Wells does not excite me...his command is AWFUL.
The Rainier's are in Salt Lake City. Do you think these two will make it for a 12:30 first pitch @ Oakland ?
I didn't know about Vidro's games played option. Holy Cow !
riggleman said in the Seattle Times article, that Vidro is in the four spot to give Ibanez protection. Much like he did with Grace in the four hole when Sammy batted three for the Cubbies.
Hulett was traded for Ben Broussard. Wells was traded for Cha Seung Baek.

Ichiro felt tightness in his hamstring or quad area last night. The string of 126 games in a row is over.
RA Dickey pitched seven innings of four hit zero run baseball, but it was wasted. The Mariners again left many guys on base. Why do they ask Kenji to bunt ? Just let him swing at the first pitch and watch him ground into a double play. Morrow blows the save. Jimenez picks up the loss.
@ KC today: Felix Hernandez vs Luke Hochevar
Last edited by Rennie Stennett; 07-11-2008 at 03:59 AM.
In the past few games the M's left about a million runners on base. Friday night in KC, they could only muster six hits (one for extra bases) against a guy who was bombed his past two starts. Luke Hochevar put the wammie to M's hitters for seven innings. Again the M's had chances to score but could not deliver the big hit. Again the Mariners received a quality start but could not give run support. This is a common theme in Marinerville.
The following to the tune Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett:
Swingin' my wiffle bat
Watchin' the sun bake
All of those KC fans covered in sunscreen
Chewin' tabbaki
In the dugacki
Smellin' the hickory in the brick pits it's ready
Wastin' away again in marinerville
Searching for my lost clutch at bat
Some people claim that there's a manager to blame
But I know its my own dam fault
I don't know the reason
I stayed here all season
Nothin' to show but this brand new contract
But its a real beauty
A guaranteed cutie
How I got here I haven't a clue
Wastin' away again in marinerville
Searchin' for my lost clutch at bat
Some people claim that there's a manager to blame
Now I think
It's my own dam fault
I blew out my hammy
Stepped on my jamies
Tore my achilles and had to fly back home
But there's roids in the blender
And soon it will render
An OBP of .400 that helps me hang on
Wastin' away again in marinerville
Searching for my lost clutch at bat
Some people claim that there's a manager to blame
But I know its my own damn fault
Yes and some people claim that there's a manager to blame
And I know its my own damn fault
After putting this together, I remembered that Deanna did some baseball Parodies. I had to check again to see if I some how jacked her stuff subconsciously. Check out her Marinerds, etc. Blog. It's good.

Now is the time to let Morrow make the transition from bullpen to rotation. Time is wasting. Why let him waste away in the bullpen. The future is now, get on with it. Either do it in Seattle or send him down. Morrow needs to be evaluated whether or not he's starter material.
I'll take Knee-Jerk Reactions for $300, Alex.
To be fair, I thought the first two pitches to Billy Butler were strikes. Both of which were change of speed but the guy in blue called it were it hit the catcher's mitt, not were they went over the plate. It changed the whole AB and it flustered Brandon somewhat. The base on balls that followed brought David DeJesus [(.306) average and (49) RBI's] to the plate.
How is this a knee jerk reaction? Seattle's mired in last place. Morrow was drafted as a starter. His future is as a starter. The Mariners need to evaluate him as a starter. His last 2 appearances are irrelevant. There is no point having him close games for a 100 loss team. This thought process is anything but "knee jerk".
Brandon Morrow gave up a first pitch two out game winning homer to David DeJesus. As mentioned in an earlier post, it should have been strike one and strike two in Billy Butler's AB, on two sinkers but Blue called them balls and this led to the four pitch walk that set the stage for DeJesus to look dead red knowing Morrow can't throw the change.
Washburn settled down after a rocky start and pitched well into the game. The Mariners did some bonehead things, as per usual. Betancourt got doubled up at first on a fly to right field. With one out Reed smoked a double to score two and he went to third on the throw but tried to score as the ball trickled away and he was dead meat. how do you like slidding into home with the plate blocked, with the Catcher having all his gear on ? Two outs. The next batter Kenji hit a fly ball to right. I hate to say it would have happened if Reed had remained at third, because everything would have been different, but I can say with one out and a guy on third you have a better shot then with two down and no one on. Enough of this lecture. Tug Hulett knocked his first big league hit. It was nice to see Riggleman stick with Reed (2-4) with the lefty on the mound in the next AB, instead of PH'ing Bloomquist. Reed had a good day at the plate.
JJ putz should get some work in the minors and perhaps Tacoma, but I've heard nothing about him throwing at Everett Aqua Sox much to my chagrin.
The All Star Break begins after today's games. Mark Grudzielanek led off the Kansas City Royals' third inning Saturday night with a single for his 2,000th career hit.Carlos Silva vs Kyle Davies @ 11:00 am

JJ Putz is scheduled to pitch friday the 18th when the Tacoma Rainiers host the Tucson Sidewinders of the Arizona D-Backs organization. Game time is 7:00 PM.
At the same time, the Cleveland Indians are in town to start a three game series as the M's open a six game homestand.
Wille Bloomquist went 2-3, scored twice and swiped two bags as the M's beat KC 4-3. Jeff Clement hit a two run, two out homer off of Kyle Davies. Carlos Silva tossed six innings and the bullpen of Smith, Green, Rhodes and Morrow cleaned up. Green, who leads the league in appearances, picked up the win and Morrow notched save # 9, which included a fly out to left by David DeJesus, Saturday's hero.
The Mariners were lucky this time. Beltre was in a pickle between home and third and he got out of it when the Buck the Catcher air mailed one to third.
The Mariners are 12-11 since Riggelman replaced John McLaren on June 20. The M's are 37-58 at the break.
"It's nice to end on a positive note before the All-Star break," Bloomquist said.

I can't believe Texas is still above .500
Mostly from beating up on the Ms I guess.
God we suck.
It is interesting the way things lay in the division races. The AL East which usually has two really good teams and three crappy teams is separated by ten games top to bottom. The AL Central has Minnesota nipping at the heals of the CHI SOX, which to some is a surprise, but it seems like the Twins do it every year. The Tigers are hot on their heels and the disappointing Cleveland Indians, who visit the Mariners after the break, are twelve games under. Out West, The Texas Rangers, as you mention are four games over and seven games behind the Angels. Texas has just been pounding teams, but their pitching is suspect. Oakland is right there, even though they traded a top pitcher and rumors fly that they may trade Huston Street. The Angels survived a couple of pounding earlier in the week by, I believe Texas and Oakland, but they seem to continue with their winning ways. The Angels closer, K-Rod, gave up a walk off to Hamilton. One of his few blemishes this year. He's got 38 saves at the break. Boston looks like the cream of the crop in the AL. They have been through it before. They rest their star players. They don't rush guys back from the DL. They have depth and their manager keeps the ship afloat all year, which is not easy with that crew.
In the NL, Arizona leads the West dispite being one game under .500. It's a tight race. In the Central, the Cubs lead St Louis and Milwaukee by four or five games. The NL East is interesting. The Phils looked to be taking a big lead but the Mets have battled back after firing Randolph. Florida is right there and Atlanta is like six back but basically out of it. The Cubs look like the best team in the NL right now. Pitching, Hitting, Defense. They are unbeatable at home and they have the best manager in both leagues with Sweet Lou.
Just a reminder that Saturday July 19th @ 12:55 is turn back the clock eighties day. The first 20,000 fans get a retro 80's cap like Alvin Davis used to wear. woo hoo !
http://mlb.mlb.com/schedule/promotio..._id=sea&y=2008The Mariners will wear retro uniforms featuring the old gold "S" on a royal blue cap and the word "Mariners" in blue and gold across the front of their jerseys. The Cleveland Indians will don the uniforms that were featured in the movie Major League.
I often check out Shannon's Blog, but with the way the M's have been playing there have not been as many posts by Shannon so I almost stopped visiting. You can't blame her. When the ball club is playing poorly there is not much to write about. You want to write good stories. Anyway, I'm getting long winded here. She hit a home run with this one. Check it out:
