Former major league player and Exporters manager Steve O'Neill actually inserted himself into a game in 1942. He was 50 years old at the time...and went 1 for 3! As the starting catcher for the World Champion 1920 Cleveland Indians, O'Neill had a .321 BA with a .408 OBP (he also hit .333 in that World Series).

So here's a pic that I've been working on for a while now: a new and improved, very large scale version of the '09 Reds. You'll want to click on the link to see it larger for sure. There's quite a variety of uniforms, caps and sweaters to behold...including the player in the back row on the right with a "W" on his sweater. Next to him is a crudely cut/pasted (literally) Miller Huggins, but hey...they didn't exactly have Photoshop way back in 1909. Cheers! ~B

Awesome! I love alternate photos from the same session...cool.
As far as the dating is concerned, I'll take a guess that it might actually be spring training for the 1908 or 1910 season (judging from the caps/uniforms). See here: 1903-1918 Pirates Uniforms

Looking at the list of uniforms it can't be earlier than 1910 and Claude Hendrix who is in the photo didn't pitch for the Pirates until 1911.
But still a great photo, BSmile.

It must be a spring training photo...they're always so hard to date because of the uniform variations, so it could be 1911.

And then there's this one. Hmph. What year do we think this one is?
(edit 8/23) So it looks like 1909 is the magic number for this team portrait.

Dto7 comes through again and solves the mystery!

Our great BF sleuth found a copy of this picture from the Pittsbugh Dispatch, dated April 17, 1910, taken at Spring training in Hot Springs, Ark.The names were barely decypherable, but I was able to get most of them. Thanks Don!

    OK...
If Bill also concurs with 1909, then I'd say it must be the '09 team.
    What say you Bill?

Good enough for anyone with baseball common sense. When it comes to baseball player IDs, GaryL is like BF Hutton. When he speaks, everyone listens!

Here's a classic large-scale version of the '14 Colonels...loaded with major league talent. Love the cursive "L" for their logo, it has a nice Laverne DeFazio look to it.
