The Spalding World Baseball Tour Stops At The Sphinx
“Spalding American Base Ball Party - Chicago vs. All America at the Sphinx. Feb. 9th 1889”
~ "The 1888/89 World Tour was the idea of sporting goods magnate Albert Spalding, who sought to introduce and popularize the American game of baseball to the four corners of the world. The Tourists, who were comprised of members of the Chicago White Stockings and an all-star group of players from both the National League and American Association, traveled to five different continents and visited fourteen different countries during their five month journey. Among the notables who participated in the tour were Cap Anson, John Ward, George Wright, Ed Hanlon, Ned Williamson, George Van Haltren, and James Ryan. In World Tourist James Ryan's journal of the Tour, his entry for February 9, 1889 reads in part: "Today is a gala day for us for a visit has been arranged to the Sphinx and Pyramids...We then had our photographs taken sitting upon the face and shoulders of the Sphinx and descending to the plain introduced the game of baseball to the Sheiks and children of Isreal upon the desert sands of Egypt. Five innings satisfied us for the fine sand blowing into our eyes made them sore so we mounted our camels and donkeys and rode home to Cairo." (excerpt from REA 2006)

~ From the old days of the Negro National League, this amazing team had three future Baseball Hall of Fame players: Cool Papa Bell, Mule Suttles and Willie Wells.

1927 New York Yankees Team Panoramic
Spring Training In St. Petersburg, Florida
~ Here’s a classic shot (and new edit) of one of the all-time classic teams, the ‘27 Yankees, as they take a break from training in the Florida sun to capture a moment in time. Lou Gehrig has a big smile on his face as he stands next to Babe Ruth in the back row, perhaps feeling a good omen of what the coming season will bring.

~ Here’s the last of the Miller Huggins led Yankees World Championship teams (he would tragically pass away in 1929). This squad would feaure no less than 9 future Hall of Famers including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Earle Combs, Stan Coveleski, Bill Dickey, Leo Durocher, Waite Hoyt, Tony Lazzeri and Herb Pennock. Huggins would also join them all in the HOF, along with team president Edward Barrow and owner Col. Jacob Ruppert.

~ It was an off-year for the ‘29 Yankees, who saw their streak of three straight World Championships (1926-28) come to an end. They managed a 2nd place finish behind the eventual World Champs, the Philadelphia A’s. Worst of all was the sudden death of manager Miller Huggins on September 25th. This photo would be one of the last team photos that Miller ever appeared in.

Spring Training In Shreveport, LA (March 10, 1921)
~ This great picture, taken 94 years ago today, would mark the Yankees first spring training camp in Louisiana. They would move over to New Orleans for 1922-24 before settling into St. Petersburg, Florida (1925-61).

1936 Pittsburgh Pirates Pose For A Panoramic
79 Yrs Ago Today at Spring Training (March 16, 1936)
~ The ‘36 Bucs were actually a pretty good team, finishing 4th in the NL with a 84-70 record. This was certainly helped by the presence of no less than six future Hall of Famers: Pie Traynor (Mgr), Honus Wagner (coach), Lloyd “Little Poison” Waner, Paul “Big Poison” Waner, Arky Vaughan and Waite Hoyt.

Judge Landis Declares Free Agency For Cardinals Minor Leaguers
77 Yrs Ago Today on March 23, 1938
1937 Cedar Rapids Raiders Team (1937 Raiders Team Stats)
~ (Wire Tag) “Declared Free Agents In Baseball Probe - Above is the Cedar Rapids baseball club, every member of which except one was declared a free agent by Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, following an expose of alleged syndicate operations by the St. Louis Cardinals. Working agreements between the Cedar Rapids club and the Cardinals were held to be illegal conduct by the high commissioner, which led to his decision. Other players affected by the Cardinals’violation of baseball rules were to be declared free agents in teams in the Missouri-Kansas, Northern, Nebraska State, North-Eastern Arkansas and Three Eye Leagues.”
