Forget the rest: Jake Peavy would have to be the number one starter on Team USA. It would be insane to consider anyone else.

I'll give it a shot for Team USA and Team Japan, even though my knowledge of Japan is a little limited.

His job was done in 2006. Now it's a turn for Hoshino.
Because Hoshino is managing Team Japan for Beijing Olympic, it's reasonable to predict that he will continue managing job until WBC of next March.

If you followed the 2006 WBC, you will know that Yankees only let the USA players participate the games to strength up the team. Matsui couldn't play for Japan, Rivera couldn't play for Panama etc.

Wang's chance of wearing the Taiwanese National Team uniform again is slim to none.

Actually, it wasn't the Yankees' policy last time. I believe Matsui opted out because he was coming back from an injury and/or he didn't want to commute back to Japan for WBC training after starting spring training in Florida.

As for Mariano Rivera, I'm not sure what his deal was, but I don't believe he's even been known to be throwing full-bore in early March. Given that Panama's team was quite weak, the WBC probably wasn't very appealing to a closer like Rivera.

Anyway, by rule, MLB teams aren't allowed to prohibit a player from playing in the WBC if he wants to. More than anything, I bet a lot of players simply didn't foresee the popularity of the WBC when they declined in '06, and will decide to play in '09.
