    A second Home Run Race

I was reading a post in the Chipper Jones thread in CE about the coverage and all about the '98 HR chase, and it got me wondering, what would happen if we had another HR race int he same fashion, between two huge fan favorites and two rival teams.

What if it was Derrek Lee and Albert Pujols, or Ryan Howard and David Wright? Do you think the coverage would be bigger than the '98 one? Would it be the same or smaller? I personally don't think it would be bigger, Big Mac and Sosa are tow of the most prolific HR hitters in the game...really the only one that compares to the two today is A-Rod, but he's not exactly the most liked person in baseball...not as much as Sosa and McGwire were in '98.

Just a note to all the active members of BBF, I consider all of you the smartest baseball people I have ever communicated with and love everyday I am on here. Thank you all!

Is A-Rod "clean"? That is the big question mark.

There is no question mark. There is zero evidence that Arod ever used steroids. None. Canseco's "dealer" actually came out and said Arod was the cleanest player he knows. When all the Canseco accusations were flying around the New York papers were tracking down every trainer Arod ever had and they found nothing. In fact the trainers that agreed to be interviewed all said the same thing, that Alex Rodriguez is a paranoid freak about what goes into his body. One guy that worked with Arod for years said that they had several conversations about steroids and that Alex was petrified about the side effects of using them and was adamant that he would never use them. He also added that Alex and his wife are so obsessed about healthy living that she carries a bottle of salad dressing in her purse so when they go out to eat the can use their own healthy dressing.

I am sure the ESPN hype machine would love nothing better than something like that to happen. As for the fans, "been there, done that". I am sure we would be excited, but not to the extent we were with McGwire & Sosa.

I think a lot of people would be excited if we had a race going between two people we could confirm haven't used any PED's. It probably wouldn't be the same level of excitement, since it's so soon after Mac and Sosa, but I think it'd be pretty cool.
The Dark Knight is the best movie I've ever seen.

Take a couple players that are future HoF'ers and put them in a serious Homerun Chase, and I'm sure it'll capture the attention of America. But it'd have to be neck and neck from the beginning of the season, with the lead switching often.

Manny vs. A-Rod would certainly do it. It'd renew the somewhat stagnant Red Sox/Yankees rivalry (stagnant from the POV of a non-RS/Y fan).
