The City denied Yankee Stadium landmark status in 2005 before the grounbreaking of the new Stadium thus allowing the Yankees to move forward. The original plan at the time of groundbreaking was to keep a scaled down version of Yankee Stadium. The City knew that they didn't legally have enough replacement parkland and the scaled down version was never a reality.

Renovated Yankee Stadium could also have been eligible for landmark status in 2006 as a 30 year old New York City building. They conveniently denied the status a year before it's eligibility.

I heard rumors that the parking garage near the bat may be demolished. If this is the case then the land that the parking lot occupies could have been used as replacement parkland.

Also Saving Gate 2 was not going to impede on any replacement parkland.

Oh, I agree with this completly, and I feel not saving it was a massive mistake.

If you ment saving something like this, then yes, it should have been done, but I thought you were talking about some sort of hybrid construction like what is depicted for that stadium above.

And if they demo the garage, I'm sure it will just be to build another one in the same place. No way they give up all that parking space.

Was there ever any talk in 1973 to make the Stadium a landmark or did nobody care about those things back then?

If what I read here was correct, it was the landmark commission or whatever it is called in NYC idea to renovate Yankee Stadium. But, why in turn they didn't give it landmark status is beyond me.

I went back to overview the thread and ran into this post. Sorry to say that swoboda was wrong. OYS went down easily. No disrespect to the people who fought for Gate 2, but we were in a minority. A very vocal minority, but a minority still. No protests, no outpouring of outraged Yankee fans, no human wall, etc. Just a, " We'll miss this place" comment and that is it.

The Landmarks Preservation Committee endorsed the renovation of Yankee Stadium in 1971 saying Yankee Stadium was culturally and historically important. This same committee who pushed for the renovation of Yankee Stadium denied it landmark status stating it was significantly altered during the renovation.

Yes......The FOIL request from the Landmark Preservation Committee showed that the LPC endorsed the renovation.

The Mayor appoints the members of the LPC. The members of the LPC will do what the Mayor wants and he wanted Yankee Stadium torn down. It's Big business Bloomberg. Without the approval of the Gateway Center down the street from Yankee Stadium.....New Yankee Stadium nevers gets built.

I know todays LPC denied it, but why didn't the LPC back in the 70's give it landmark status? It was their freaking idea to renovate it citing it was an historic building.

In any case, I ordered, "Yankee Stadium: The Final Season" and, " Going, Going, Gone: Images of the Demolition of Yankee Stadium" from Amazon. Can't wait until they get here.

It wasn't their idea to renovate the Stadium but by endorsing the renovation they were helping Burke and Lindsay keep the Yankees in the Bronx and preventing the Yankees from fleeing to Jersey along with the New York Football Giants.

Is " Going, Going, Gone: Images of the Demolition of Yankee Stadium" by Steve Spak? I met him on March 31, 2010 when Gate 2 was demolished. Keep me posted on what you think about the images in print.

Ok, but my main question still stands. Why didn't they give it landmark status back then?

And yeah, it is by Steve Spak.

lindsay and cbs wanted new,"landmarking" would have thwarted their new place.
that's what happens when big biz and politicians get together.
the criteria for landmark status was more strict then than now.

What happened to the thread "Yankee Stadium Demolition"?
RYS to NYS: "Obi-Lonn never told you what happened to your father."

NYS: "He told me enough. He told me you killed him - in the 1970s!!"

RYS: "No, I am your father..."

NYS: "No, it's not true, that's impossible!!!!"

RYS: "Look beyond my respirator pods and my upper crown; you know it to be true!

In the late 60s - early 70s - if they were going straight for a NYS, it would never have been allowed to be built. That acitivist spirit did not exist in 2004-2005 - folks are such pushovers today!

How dumb are we? Of course we know "Yankee Stadium Demolition" refers to the original/only YS(for some of us). People just love to change things.

Ask those folks who think that the Yankee's are consciously trying to make us believe that all of their history happened in NYS

I think the City(owners of O/RYS) share that guilt equally! Is it working? We'll have to see what the recollections are of Yankee fans born in 2000 or later.

I hate to wade in on this argument, but my personal experience from being at the Stadium, buying official Yankees publications, watching YES and listening to WCBS, never led me to believe that the Yankees brass are saying, all the history happened at NYS. On YES the broadcasters, when discussing events that occurred pre-2009 say something like 'In the Old Park across the street' etc and so do Yankees magazines when they do stories on past Yankees events. And in the museum and monument park did I not see anything that said events occurred at NYS not old. Just my 2 cents saying I agree with DN4L, giantsean etc.
