    Carlin

    Rest in Laughter, George.

I YouTubed him for about two hours today and his routines from 1996 and 1999 and 2001 are just as relevant today. Who is going to make me laugh like that again?

Man, I was devastated by the news of his passing. Hes IMO the greatest comedian ever. I love his baseball vs. football thing. He went against things I believed in, but he did it in a way I could laugh. lol. RIP George!

Carlin was not just funny but he had a way of making people stop and think. He was a very smart and perceptive guy who was never afraid of telling the truth of what he saw in the world. RIP

I'll be honest and say I know very little of Carlins material and even less about his personal beliefs, but does anyone else feel he is being less than complimentary to the game of baseball in the baseball vs football sketch?

No doubt, he's pro football, con baseball. The voice alone gives that way.

But he did acknowledge baseball as a real sport. There's baseball, football and basketball and everything else is derivative.

The above is not an invitation to argue the late Mr. Carlin's routine.

I couldn't disagree more. There's nothing in his voice to suggest he's pro football, con baseball. When he speaks about baseball, his voice is happy, though dripping with sarcasm. He ridicules the sport in his own way. When he speaks about football, his voice takes on the tone of someone who finds the militancy of the sport depressing. He mocks both sports, but baseball is the pleasant sport, football the unpleasant one.

By the way, Carlin said he dreaded celebrity deaths, because of all the (deleted) he had to deal with on the news, and all the stupid (deleted) tributes. Instead of all this "we miss you, George" crap, let's just carry on with our lives and continue to think about the little things that make life so interesting.

I put him #2 alltime behind Richard Pryor, and he was surely the funniest comedian in the business for the last 20 years. We will miss you, George.

And the seven BBF phrases you can't say . . .

Traditionalists might want to look into sabermetrics
    Burgess might be overestimating Cobb
ARod might be as good as Jeter
Sisler, Koufax and Ryan are overrated
They need to have the Yanks & Bosox on ESPN more
ElHalo makes a lot of sense, and
    RuthMayBond may have a point
Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.

No. Perhaps he makes gentle fun of some idiosyncrasies, but I always interpreted the main message as an appreciation of baseball's unique and timeless qualities.

Indeed, I've heard people refer to this as Carlin's "why baseball is better than football" routine.

Maybe Carlin could have gone the other way?...

(Read with a deep, masculine voice)
Baseball players play nearly every day. Baseball has bench clearing brawls, headhunters, the hot corner, stealing, bullpens, and batters that carry 2-pound clubs that occasionally will fly into the stands and injure anyone in their way. Baseballs are as hard as a rock, and have been known to cause serious injury, or death.

    (Read with a 4-year old girl's voice)
Football players play once a week, and once a season they have a bye so that they can rest. Football has quarterbacks, who put their hands under the center's bottom to retrieve the ball, even though they don't have to. And, if their hands get cold, they can put them in a muff that is tied around their waist, like a fanny pack. If the players get too tired they can catch some z's during the 20 minute intermission in the middle of the game. Footballs are filled with air, and getting hit by one could cause a small bruise.
