I'm not going to count Anson as ineligible because the only non-Cubs teams he played for existed before there was even a National League

The best I could come up with is:

    1B: Anson
    2B: Don Johnson
    3B: Stan Hack
    SS: Ernie Banks
OF: I can't come up with anyone for any of the three spots

    P: Zambrano

WOW. That really is it. Wow.

This is a lot more difficult than I thought when I started out...

I read that to mean that he meant the Reds were the only team he managed.

    Dodgers

    C- Roy Campanella
    1B-
    2B- Jackie Robinson
    3B- Jim Gilliam
    SS- Pee Wee Reese
    LF-
    CF-
    RF- Carl Furillo

    P- Don Drysdale, Sandy Koufax,

    Finally, Post # 500.

Ouch, the Yanks lose Berra in this thread because of a lousy four games with the Mets.

Hmmmm... this team would be good if we can ignore those 149 at-bats Gil Hodges had with the Mets at the end of his career and Zack Wheat's 247 at-bats during his final season with the A's. We almost get some pitchers too... like Doug Rau.

    building on that:

C- Roy Campanella (Mike Scioscia) (Otto Miller)
    1B- Wes Parker
    2B- Jackie Robinson
    3B- Jim Gilliam
SS- Pee Wee Reese (Bill Russell)
LF- Andre Ethier ? (Sandy Amoros edited out)
    CF- Johnny Frederick
    RF- Carl Furillo (Harry Lumley)

P- Don Drysdale, Sandy Koufax, Nap Rucker, Carl Erskine

Like most teams, we are hurt by many players who tried to hang on for one or two more seasons at the end of their careers. Duke Snider makes this team better... Gil Hodges....

    1B: Gehrig
2B: Cano? (I was going to put Lazzeri, but I see he played his final season with Chicago)
    SS: Jeter
    3B: Rolfe
    LF: Henrich
    CF: Mantle/DiMaggio
    RF: Combs
    C: Berra

P: Ron Guidry, Whitey Ford, Spud Chandler, Russ Ford
    Closer: M. Rivera
You may have to rough it with Posada or Munson

The Cubs have GOT to be the team most hurt by this.

Cubs HOFers (I'm including Santo, by god!) who are disqualified and the few games with other teams that disqualify them.

C: Hartnett (64 games with Giants)
1B: Chance (13 games with Yankees)
2B: Sandberg (13 games with Phillies)
3B: Santo (117 games with White Sox)
LF: Williams (275 games with Athletics)

Their lineup if those guys were allowed:

    C: Hartnett
    1B: Chance
    2B: Sandberg
    SS: Banks
    3B: Santo
    LF: Williams
    CF: ?
    RF: ?
    P: Zambrano

    That's a dang good core!

Here's the best Cubs team I could come up with:

    C Paul Gillespie
    1B Ernie Banks
    2B Don Johnson
    3B Stan Hack
    SS Charlie Hollocher
    OF Matt Murton
    OF Denver Grigsby
    OF Bob Will
    SP Carlos Zambrano
    RP Kerry Wood

Now for my team, the Astros:

    C Tony Eusebio
    1B Jeff Bagwell
    2B Craig Biggio
    3B Gary Cooper
    SS J. C. Hartman
    OF Lance Berkman
    OF Hunter Pence
    OF Mike White
    SP Roy Oswalt
    RP Chris Sampson

Pretty sad. We'd have a better team, except a lot of our players moved on for the first time this year.

Yankees could have Hall of Famer Bill Dickey at catcher and Bobby Richardson at second base.

That's a top 25. I haven't checked the list closely, my database only runs through the 2007 season. Some of these may have changed teams for the first time this year.

Good calls. I screwed the pooch on my Berra pick...I didn't know he ever played for the Mets.

    Yankees:

    C Dickey
    1B Gehrig
    2B McDougald
    3B Rolfe
    SS Jeter
    OF Mantle
    OF DiMaggio
    OF Williams
    SP Ford
    RP Rivera

    And check out this bench:

    C Munson
    1B Mattingly
    2B Richardson
    3B Brown
    SS Rizzuto
    OF White
    OF Combs
    OF Henrich

That just isn't fair. The Yankees bench could beat a lot of teams' starters.
