Personally, I don't consider other contributions much. If I think a guy is borderline for a yes or no, it can come into play, but I definitely tend to go with what they did as players. Player/managers are tough because they had a merged role, and it isn't always easy separating the two. Those guys are likely to get a boost if they had success as the titular head of the team.

Thanks for the heads-up on Dark. I'll have to conjure up another shortstop.

I suspect like others here I often forget to consider non-playing roles. I usually remember it in close cases where it can serve as a tie-breaker. This may have happened for Dark, Ferrell and McCarver; I don't recall who else I considered. In any case, it's generally too minor to make a large impact on rankings.
