# Thread: Most common MLB final score

1. ## Most common MLB final score

I don't know if this has been covered in other threads and I don't know the answer to this but is there any data on what is the most common final score in MLB?

My personal guess is 5-2.

2. My guess: either 4-3 or 3-2.

3. ## My guess...

With teams averaging between 4 and 5 runs per game and a 4-4 game impossible to come by, I am going to go with 5-4 as the most common score, followed by 5-3, 6-4, 4-3 etc... Perhaps in a lower run environment era it would be 4-3.

AutographCollector nailed it.

I queried all of the Retrosheet gamelogs from 1900-2006. Here are the 10 most common scores in order of frequency...

3-2
4-3
2-1
5-4
4-2
3-1
5-3
6-5
5-2
4-1

The reason Xeifrank's logic doesn't work ), is that run scoring does not follow a normal distribution. In a 5 run/game environment, neither 5 nor 4 are the most common number of runs scored. The reason is that you can't score less than zero, but you can certainly score more than 10.

6. Dave, can you show since 1919, and since 1993?

7. Clearly...bullpens are extremely important if that distribution holds in the bullpen era...seems more common that games are close than that they are not...more common by quite a lot.

11. ## 2008

What is it for 2008?
Thanks.

12. Great job guys. Nice presentation Dave!

Xei: what's the point of knowing 2008? The 2000s is very similar to 1930s. Clearly 2008 will be very similar to the 1980s, 1990s or 2000s, and tehre's little difference in those 3 decades.

Matt,

Here's a breakdown of the distribution by margin of victory. I'm comparing 1900- to the "bullpen era", which I tagged at 1970+. While there may be a difference in how the margins are arrived at, there's actually not a great difference in the frequency of the margins.

Code:
```	Since 1900	Since 1970
margin	freq%	cum%	freq%	cum%
1	30.27	30.27	29.79	29.79
2	18.18	48.45	18.54	48.33
3	14.51	62.95	14.78	63.11
4	10.99	73.94	11.19	74.3
5	 8.02	81.96	 8.07	82.37
6	 5.66	87.62	 5.75	88.12
7	 3.98	91.6	 4.03	92.15
8	 2.83	94.42	 2.82	94.97
9	 1.83	96.25	 1.82	96.79
10	 1.23	97.47	 1.22	98
11	 0.75	98.22	 0.77	98.77
12	 0.51	98.73	 0.48	99.25```
I would like to know for trivia purposes. That ok?
## To wrgptfan/Dave
How does it break down for the Post-World War Two Era: 1946-2007?
17. Good stuff -- how about just a frequency table of runs scored (by individual teams, not combined) since 1993?
7            1            1520```
19. So, there's a possible save-style high-leverage finish in roughly 63% of games...that's a rather big deal.
20. Any update the number of 3-2 games through 2008?
