Thread: Marlins Park Construction

  1. #1076
I am confussed all I was saying is that they seemed to sell out baseball games in the 20s, the 50s, 70s, and 80s. None of those games had anything but baseball and food to offer. I don't care what baseball parks want to offer if it causes a sell out. I like watching the kiss cam and boat races on the jumbo tron, but I also like watching every pitch of a game. I am not the person a team should call if they want a definative black and white answer on should they focus on the game or the aminities.
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time.

Actually, from the simulated seat view feature, it alreadly looks pretty small and intimate to me.

Of course, that may be in part because I'm so used to seeing 67,000 seats, so most anything will look small and intimate. But it should be a good thing....except when the Marlins play their first playoff game in the place....then I confess I'd miss the old place a bit.

I would be it is well correlated with the rise of the US population and the rise in disposable income. If anyone is trained in stats/regression analysis it would make an interesting study.

It makes sense. Marlins season ticket sales were at an all-time low after the team almost left in 2001. By 2009, sales in anticipation of the new park had begun to take hold.

As I've always said, the Marlins' biggest problem in the South Florida community was their stability. As long as there was the threat of relocation out in the open, many people were a little hesitant to embrace a team that they weren't sure would be in town much longer. Hopefully, the upward trend will continue as they move into their new park.

Drove by the place today. It does look a lot larger in person than some of the pictures lead you to believe, but then again, it's a sports stadium.

There was also a big attendance spike in 2004 and 05. Remember, the team was horrendous at the beginning of 2003, and playoff contention really wasn't even on anyone's mind till the second half. And they sure filled the place up for the playoffs. It would be interesting to see a game-by-game breakdown in 2003, from before Jeff Torborg got fired compared to the wild card run.

In the early 2000s, Marlins fans heard practically every year that the state had rejected the ballpark funding, and it was only a matter of time before we became the San Antonio or Portland or DC or Las Vegas Marlins. We had nowhere to go but up from the dark ages in the early 2000s, when we were routinely the worst team in baseball and didn't even draw a million one year.

Will it still be the same cap insignia of a Marlin with an "M" instead of an "F", or will they go through a complete Uni overhaul when they become the Miami Marlins?

A complete uniform overhaul is coming. We don't know yet how extensive it will be, other than that since the current ownership doesn't like teal, there will be somewhere between less and none of it. I would imagine it's going to be a good bit different. Here's the old batting practice hat logo, and maybe the shape will be used in the new uniforms, but the colors will probably be different.

They've also started to install the seating bowl flooring on the 3rd base line:

I think it’s funny how this dome stadium has a larger permanent roof than any of the open air stadiums. I wish we had a larger roof in Cleveland so you could have a place to go to get out of the sun or the rain or on occasion snow.

  15. #1090
The new ballpark will almost certainly never have the roof open for a day game, so in a way the area of shade the fixed portion of the roof provides is sort of irrelevant. I guess it will keep the sun off the seats while the roof is open to let the grass grow, though. It does seem stupid how little shade there is at most of the other new parks. You can only count on a few rows in the upper deck, and maybe at the very back of the lower decks, but not much more. If they ever do hold a roof-open day game at the new ballpark, the big roof will sure be appreciated

The third base side risers have started going in this week. They're working on the second deck now. If they do that as fast as they did the first base side, the majority of the grandstand will be up in a week or so

Dolphins owner plans water park across from Sun Life Stadium

    By Sarah Talalay, Sun Sentinel

    6:44 p.m. EDT, August 19, 2010

    MIAMI GARDENS —
The Miami Dolphins chose a sweltering afternoon in a parking lot southeast of Sun Life Stadium to show off team and stadium owner Steve Ross' latest plan to entertain South Floridians: a water park.

The project is proposed for 40 acres south of Dan Marino Boulevard where the plans were unveiled. Ross, a real estate developer, plans to lead a team that will pay for the project. Half of the property, owned by Ross and his partners, including former team owner H. Wayne Huizenga, would remain parking.

Dolphins CEO Mike Dee said the project will help the team recoup some revenue it will lose when the Florida Marlins Get your Marlins Tickets now! depart Sun Life Stadium for a new ballpark in Little Havana in 2012. Ross' team plans to pursue permitting and zoning and begin construction next spring with a planned opening in summer 2012.

"If there's anything you say about Steve, he's tried to make a big splash here in South Florida since he acquired the franchise," Dee said. "Today we take that term literally."
