Thread: 2009 IP Success Thread

  1. I went down to spring training last week. Didn't do as well as I thought I would because things came up and I couldn't get to stadiums as early as I had expected, but here is what I did get.

Kelly Johnson and Yunel Escobar both signed a ball.
Dale Murphy signed a ball and a ticket.
Got a bat from someone on the Jays. Not sure who. The bat is brand new. Not sure why he gave it to me.
Line up card with Bobby Cox auto.
    8 OMLB balls.

Dale Murphy was definitely the highlight of my trip. Would have like to get a few more autos but was a little busy.

I appreciate the words of kindness, SDL!

I'd have responded sooner but my computer's hard drive died and they currently trying to drag all the data off it. Meanwhile I'm using my Windows 98 machine that's a complete POS.

At Reds/Orioles AA/AAA ST games today:

    All 8 x 10 card blowups

    Denny Walling: Topps '79, '88, '89

    Gary Allenson: Topps '83

Dave Schmidt: Donruss '87, Topps '91

Wanted to add this about Walling He makes a comment in jest about how if he sees these (his blowups) on eBay, he'll have me hunted down...then some of the young O's players who watched him sign were razzing him about the longer hair and "porn 'stache" he sported back then. Even some of the other coaches got into it and razzed Walling. When I was getting Allenson's sig, Walling comes over and has me show him (Allenson) his cards.

This world needs more Denny Wallings in it for everybody to stay sane.

Earlier today was the Open Practice for the Mets at Citi Field. People who bought Season ticket and packages where invited for free to watch practice.
Someone in my office gave me a ticket.
I was like a zoo when it came to getting autographs. It seemed like players where told to sign in groups of 2 to 3. I would say 30% to 40% of the team where signing in variuos locations. Behind the dugout and down the right field line. David signed on the 3rd base side.
I was able to get Garry Sheffield, Daniel Murphy, Nick Evans, Mike Pelfrey and Alex Cora. All on OMLB's. When I asked Evans for the SS he asked me my name and personlized it. Murphy is on the SS also. But, then Sheffield came and I didn't have any more balls and ended with Sheffield on the same ball with Murphy. I'm pretty happy with who I had
There was almost no crowd control and at times it really got out of hand. Beltran started signing and I was just about to get him. But, the security stopped him because things started get nuts. I had a woman on my back and everyone was pushing and even a few kids started crying. It should have been originized better.
When people see the chance to get guys like Betran, people go crazy! It was a bad place for kids
    Was anyone else there?

    Jim Slaton (Mgr)
    Luis Maza
    Nick DeBarr
    Henry Bonilla
    Chin-Lung Hu

I still need a bunch of the pitchers to sign. Shawn Estes, Erick Threets, and Jeff Weaver just to name a few. Oh, I also snagged one foul ball today too! The next home game that I'll be attending will be on May 2 against the Round Rock Express.

A little late posting these IP successes from the Opening Series between the Dodgers and Padres April 6-9 at Petco Park. I've been having computer trouble which is why the delay, as well as me not posting my TTM successes. But here's pics of what I got.

Ramon Troncoso Dodgers 16x20 team photo

Dave Stewart sat a few rows in front of me at the game and no one recognized him. He left shortly after the 7th inning stretch. I had him signed my IC and we chatted for a few. Very nice guy! We talked about his 3 year stretch 1988-1990 when he just dominated hitters. I then asked him how he never won a Cy Young and his answer was, "politics, just politics." I asked who won it those 3 years and how can you explain their seasons being better. Stewart answered, "I think Saberhagan won one of those years. And then Bob Welch. He won 27 games. You had to give it him." When he signed my IC I asked him for a WS MVP inscription and he jokingly said, "I wish I could add a Cy Young inscription." He never added any inscription, but a great auto for my collection. I'm thinking of putting together a shawdowbox for Stewart and my Fernando stuff in a "2 no-hitters on the same day."

Orlando Hudson and Casey Blake also signed 2 cards for me but I traded it to another Dodgers fan that didn't have any of their cards. In return I got a Kuroda Heritage chrome and DeWitt RC's along with a few other cards which I later got signed. Hudson was a great guy joking and talking with us all. Will Ohman also signed a bunch and is one of the nicest, funniest people I have ever met. I didn't get anything signed by him as I was too busy laughing and talking. I sat in the 1st row behind the Dodgers bullpen one night and Ohman was just hilarious. It was Military Night and Ohman was tossing balls from the bullpen to all the military guys sitting within tossing distance - during the game! He was also "secretly" signing autographs during the game for the military guys who asked.

I went to Cubs spring training for their last week in AZ, and as usual got plenty of autographs, all on OMLBs unless otherwise noted.

    Major Leaguers:
    Kevin Gregg
    Rich Harden
    Aaron Miles
    Aaron Heilman
    Milton Bradley

    Minor Leaguers:
Josh Vitters (5x7 I took of him last year)
Darwin Barney (5x7 from last year)
Tyler Colvin (5x7 from last year)
    Welington Castillo
    Starlin Castro
    Ryan Flaherty
    Jay Jackson
    Hak-Ju Lee
    Steve Clevenger
Brandon Guyer (and grabbed his broken bat out of a trash can in a dugout)
    Junior Lake
    Jovan Rosa
    Marquez Smith
    Mitch Atkins
    Tony Thomas
    Ty Wright
    Logan Watkins
    Matt Cerda
    Alex Maestri
    Larry Suarez
    Sam Fuld

    Former Cubs:
Ryne Sandberg and Lee Smith (with silver sharpie on a Cubs road cap)
Also had Ryno sign a 5x7, but he was rushing and it doesn't look too pretty)

Could've paid $20 to get Fergie Jenkins or Bob Feller, but didn't have a clean ball for Feller to sign and I've gotten Fergie for free many times before.
A lot of people say this honor validates my career, but I didn't work hard for validation. I didn't play the game right because I saw a reward at the end of the tunnel. I played it right because that's what you're supposed to do, play it right and with respect. If this validates anything, it's that learning how to bunt and hit and run and turning two is more important than knowing where to find the little red light at the dug out camera. - Ryne Sandberg

At the White Sox - Rays game yesterday I was able to get two autos, Juan Nieves and Mark Salas, both former MLB'ers and the White Sox bullpen coach and catcher respectively. Not too many White Sox players were signing outside of a couple of the relief pitchers on their way to the bullpen. Paul Konerko signed for some people, but would only give signatures to children.

  23. Hey...I was at that game too.

Today was team signing day for the Red Wings. They forced all their players out onto the field to sign for us even though they battled through a 13 inning game (which they lost to the SWB Yankees, 17-14).

And the best part was - I had no cards of these guys, for the most part.

I still came away with some stuff though:

    Red Wings:

    Tim Lahey, 1/1
    Matt Macri, 1/1
    Kevin Mulvey, 4/4
    Tommy Watkins, 1/1

And a whole bunch of autograph sheets.

    Yankees:

    Shelley Duncan, 1/1
    Phil Hughes, 2/4
    John Rodriguez, 1/1

Today was okay card wise, I always know games are coming up but I never actually remember to prepare ahead of time and buy cards, and that always comes back to haunt me. I mean autograph sheets are sweet, but how many does one person really need? I'll get scans up eventually.
